"In the Track of Speed", by Stirling Moss.
In no way self-praising and about the days when racing was about cars built on shoe strings without financial sponsors. Amusing too in places.

Too many to choose from but the one that I reread a lot is "Smoke, Sand, and Rubber" by Mel Anthony. It covers "Methanol Mel's" midget racing exploits from the 1930's to the 50's. |

It's many years since I read it but I think I have fond memories of:
"Memories of Men & Motor Cars" by S.C.H. Davis

A couple of my favorites are "Racing Mechanic" by Alf Francis, and "The Works Mini's " by Peter Browning. |

Best Damn Garage In Town, Henry 'Smokey' Yunicks autobiography.
From Flying Tigers, and piloting over 50 B17 missions over Europe in WW2 to building NASCAR/Indianapolis racers and all the cheating that ensued. |

BigJohn,
I looked for a copy of this book and it is one hell of a book and price. A boxed set of 3 volumes (1080 pages) is £416 and the cheapest , a paperback at 652 pages is £157.
Way out of my price range. _________________ Keep Torqueing,

For old books, one of my favourites is one titled 200 Motoring Gadgets, published in the early 1950s iirc, it describes ingenious modifications and devices that could be put together by anyone reasonably handy at DIY.

Managed to get a copy of this from Amazon. £23. Published 1952. Should be a good read. Thanks! |

No doubt that in the hero stakes the Alf Francis - Racing Mechanic gets my vote, but a realistic novel I've read time and again is "The Last Open Road" by B S Levy. A gripping and realistic read. |

I have no idea what my copy cost as it was a Christmas present from one of my sons some time back, I do know he got it from the States, then tried to nick it back when I had finished reading it.
It is still in my possesion, for as with borrowing my tools, the usual deposit applies......
One testicle.
