I caught the two episodes where the guys start to rebuild that two floored caravan - that is one ugly van!
It must weigh 'a ton' if it uses tongue & grooved just for the floor, no wonder he bought an ex-military (a story in itself) prototype truck to pull it. Hope to catch it again to see how they progress. |

This is an old show made a number of years ago and repeated on various different network channels
Some items of interest and at least the presenter has a personality!
Sadly, the only original part of the Berkley Statesman double decker caravan was the axle and the window frames so one could hardly say it was a restoration.
The rest of the van had completely new panels, flooring and even furniture due to wood worm and rot.
I wonder where it is now though?

It could have been restored, if enough work was put into it, but they decided to "modernise" the old girl and ended up with a monstosity of polished ali and tarts bedroom interior. _________________ I can resist anything except temptation ! ( Oscar Wilde)

I've set the recorder and I have to say, I've not seen this before. _________________

I've been in a few tart's bedrooms over the years in my previous career - now there's something to look forward to! |

I watched the program for the first time, having missed it in the past
The Berkley van was rescued by the HCC some years ago, and was going to be restored by the shuttleworth museum, this fell through and the van had to found a home fast or it would have been broken up ,
I was asked to take it on, but thought at the time, there was more worthy vans to be restored, than what is to all intents a `Static caravan` and a very rotten one at that
So i am glad the van was rescued , and it was filmed , a shame so much of the van was thrown away, and ending up more of a replica than a resto
It was also good to see featured my old Brayshaw showmans ( the one i use in my picture ) this took over a year to restore and cost over 4k ! might have made a good tv program

Yes. They found the van in a field if I remember correctly. Had lots of woe getting it out. I´m glad it´s been -renewed- Resoration was out of the question as it was so rotten. I would have painted it as it was in the colour photo ad. It´s ugly in a nice way but was meant as a perminant home really. I rescude a Astral Sunrise from 1964. Kept it in the barn for many years but never managed to have a go at it. Had to sell it in the end. 2 guys turned up from Stockholm in a very large -box- lorry and -swollowed it. Hope they renovated it.... |

I like to watch the video of this restoration whenever I think I have taken on too much!
They should have replaced that old axle, though. |

I've got the original article by the HCC when this van was discovered and rescued from the back of a garden where the owners children once played in it when they were younger. I also vaguely recall it was sold for a £1 in it's then current state. But it was an ugly dinosaur and they would of been better to had sprayed the bodywork. Still it was an interesting restoration protect to watch on TV so I'm not knocking it

Reminds me of the old tale about the man who found a rusty nut and bolt in his back garden and recognised it as off his dads old Bentley. So he polished it all up and got it looking nearly new, then built a body around it, put in all the engine and other bits he had purchased and after a lot of work it was a working Bentley again. Then at a show someone looked under the car and asked why there was an old nut and bolt there that looked like it had been dug out of the ground. The owner told him "its coming off next week and going in the bin " and he had a nice new one to put on, to go with the condition of the rest of the car. _________________ I can resist anything except temptation !
