Just been to our local classic car club show and for this Gracie towed Nyala (our classic car towing our classic caravan) . Although Gracie coped fine it was leisurely so come the national our xc90 will tow the caravan . What pleased us though was with the heavy duty springs she sat level it was just noticeable the difference in 40 odd years of engine development .
The picture was not taken by us .

Beautiful outfit gillberry. A bit surprised to hear that towing was "leisurely", though. BrianM tows his Safari all over Europe with his Amazon with no problems, and quite quickly, too. A couple of years ago a group of us went to Belgium, and he had no trouble keeping pace with us, and I was driving my Range Rover. He was "tail-end Charlie" in a convoy of five outfits, and we couldn't lose him (though we tried very hard  ) |

Obviously it must have been dry in your neck of the woods.
Here it has not stopped raining all day and it still is,after midnight.
We thought better of getting anything out today,we went to a show two weeks ago same sort of weather then,ankle deep in mud,had to clean two cars and one caravan with the pressure washer then spread the muck on the veg garden afterwards.
Hope it dries up tomorrow (Monday)we have tickets for Lamport Hall, but the rally field will be a bit waterlogged.

Crikey Emmerson - that was almost a compliment, you must be getting mellow in your old age!!
As you say I would not consider my towing speeds to be "leisurely" in the Amazon with the Safari. I tend to cruise at 55mph and can easily push it to 65 if I need to pass trucks, (or Royale Caravans!!).
But I am not sure if Gracie has the 2 litre engine with twin SU's, but I do know that the Estates had a lower rear axle ratio so the initial take off may be a lot slower.
I have a modern 4x4 that doesn't even notice the Safari on the back, but to me it is the sense of adventure in using a 41 year old car to pull a classic caravan that make the journeys worthwhile.
In the past 12 months I have done trips of 2400 miles to Sweden, 900 miles to East Holland, as well as several UK runs of 200 miles plus.
Why not tow with the modern and have Mrs G follow in Gracie to park next to the Caravan at the show ?

Hi Brian , Gracie has the 2litre engine and now has twin carbs . My comment was purely based on the fact that normally our Nyala is towed by our xc90 which does not feel the caravan on the back . We knew there would be a difference but it was a surprise (Gracie hasn't towed the caravan for over ayear ). We would have no problem towing our Nyala with Gracie to anywhere in this country or as in your case europe but when we have a big modern xc90 to do the job . Having recently fitted the twin carbs there has been a certain amount of exploring the power delivery and putting our Nyala on the back of Gracie yesterday was a noticeable difference in that power delivery , it was still smooth just that the speedo needle did not climb as fast . Hence my comment about leisurely and the difference in 40years of motoring . |

It rained all day but with the caravan we could at least dry out a bit and have a warm drink, two soggy people an two very soggy doggies, it was a shame as last year there were over 800 cars and this year about 100 and today guess what the sun is out!! |

I was hoping to get to this with my old land rover, as I live about 20 minutes from Lamport and I normally get to go. Work got in the way though and I couldn't afford the time off.
