In the days when I had a seriously corroded fuel tank - that used to block the fuel line etc I used to think seriously about where I might break down before setting out. Taking to the air in something that has the likelihood of engine failure seems somewhat foolhardy to say the least! |

The remains of that aircraft are largely in one piece and it looks like it landed wings level, so it surprises me that the "crash" caused instantaneous death.
I wonder if the pilot had a medical emergency, like a heart attack and that prompted the forced landing which then caused the damage? Either way, a terrible loss of the pilot and my sympathies to his family. |

A very tragic loss of life.
I'll wait for the accident invetigation report before I start speculating and telling everybody what the cause was.
Do you think that the shuttleworth museum would be unable to tell if a fuel tank was rusty. |

You are right Roger, this is an absolute tragedy, but my point was not suggesting a cause, but simply pointing out that in my world, venturing out with 4 wheels on terra firma when you have questionable reliability is a cause for concern. Taking to the air seems to move this on to a new league. I certainly take ajlelectronics point though that the accident may have been human error or a medical problem. It is sad to see a unique plane destroyed in this way, but the effect on the pilots family must be devastating. Thoughts go out to them all! |

That confused me, because I'm sure the early news reports said that he was airlifted from the scene and died later, but a later one says as above.
I have a lot of respect for people who fly these older aircraft, as Paul said it's one thing to have a car that you drive with that slight feeling of trepidation as to whether it will arrive without assistance. |
