On ebay, looks a lovely caravan, but I think its early to mid 1960's, judging by the fridge and cooker. A bit over priced too in my humble opinion. what do you think ?

Hi

Very similar to the 14' we have. Normal water leaks too (roof and corners). It looks like a mid sixties caravan, when comparing it to ours.

Cheers Dyna

PS: We have the same cooker but different fridge

Interesting. Dick at Stirling Caravan Services reckoned ours is a 1966. This caravan has additional windows at the rear, but our has additional gas lanterns above the front window and fridge. Of course Dick could have been wrong about our caravan's age.

We certainly didnt pay £2800 for ours earlier this year.

Hello All,
We had a '63 12' which we sold last year.
I believe this to be the 12'6" de Luxe model, probably mid 60's/70's, definately not 50's anyway.
Best Regards.
Wes.

I agree, don't think it is a fifties Stirling. Looks very similar to the 1971 van we had, door was at the front, though. Cooker and fridge and sink are the same as in our van.

Dick Harding would be the best judge of the age.

Agree Dick would be the man. That said ours is a 69 and has the newer lights so its most likely manufactured before 69.

Cheers Dyna

PS: Anybody have original fridge to a 69 for sale Smile.

Hi all,

I saw this old thread and even though the debate is probably over, I did speak to Dick Harding and Tony Biggs at Stirling Caravan Services about my Stirling's age. Dick assures me there is no such thing as a 1950s Stirling because Stephens and West only started to manufacture them in c.1961 after having build a factory prototype in the very late 50s. I dated mine as a 1965 based on the serial number:

51220 - 5 is the year / 12 is the length (feet) / 20 is the production number. So it could have been a 65 or 75, as they closed down in 1981. And from there it was a case of dating from the appliances (Electrolux fridge, Morco lights, Calor cooker etc). They didn't change much in the entire 20 year history of building them.

This date has been contentious here in Australia, because the previous two owners all thought it was a 1958 model and therefore it was sold on that basis. But then again, their only method of dating it was to compare it to the few other examples on the internet (including an article in the Guardian newspaper) referring to a '58 model - so the Guardian got that wrong too!
