| Had one or two scary moments towing my little Eccles recently with side swaying going on. It has been suggested that if I could fit a stabilizer my driving life would become less stressful. I still use the old eye and pin draw bar so is it possible to fit a stabilizer? |

Hi
If the pin end has standard bolt holes, same as on a ball fitting then a Bulldog type stab should fit.

| Thanks Penman, yes I have a standard ball hitch attached to my car, I then attach my adapter onto the towing ball. The adapter has a section that allows the eye pin to slot in. I will have a look at the stabilizers and hope. |

If your tyres are under inflated you will get sway, especially if you have crossplys fitted. In the vintage Caravan Magazine issues they state that on caravans its adviseable to over inflate the tyres by 30% over the pressure on the tyre as fitted to a car. This prevents swaying and gives a better tow.

| Thanks Dalek, checked tyre pressures and they are OK. Its the combination of the height of the caravan on tall skinny tyres and only leaf sprung as well. |

Hi
Does your adaptor throw the pivot point further back?
I believe that the central pivot on a spring leaf type stab has to be in line (transversely) with the towing pivot point.

Yes, the ball section obviously fits onto the car ball as normal, behind the ball is the section that accepts the eye of the draw bar. So the eye and pin sit back behind the ball by about three inches. If I could do pic's I would  |

| I have now fitted a new ball & pin hitch in one to the car, am going to have a tow around this weekend and hope the change helps stability. |

I'll stay off the road, then. 
This was interesting to me as my oldest van is ring and pin, with leaf springs, but not yet tried it at speed. |

Scarlet snail, whereabouts in Suffolk are you, PM me if you like and we can arrange for a look at the towing arrangement on my car/caravan.
The leaf springs on my Eccles are a little worn, I'm going to wrap them in denso tape as this is said to stiffen the springs a little.  |
