As if I didn't have enough items already I think I just got into the Old Outboard Motor collecting and restoring hobby.
I already had a 3 but after a trip to Texas to visit my Dad, I ended up with 3 more. As my 77 year old Dad is still in the boating business, there are still more to get but the Jeep Liberty could only carry so many along with all the Lionel o-gauge train items. Next spring I'll return and bring back a 1957 Lone Star Skipper fishing boat with a '57 Johnson Javelin 35hp and a few more old motors.
The outboards that I already had are....
1950-52 Mercury KG4H Rocket Hurricane 7.5hp Quicksilver racing outboard.
1955 Johnson Sea Horse 10hp
1962 Mercury 110, 9.8hp
196? Mariner 10-speed electric trolling motor
The new additions are.....
1952 Evinrude Lightwin 3hp
1955 Mercury Comet Super Silent Six 6hp
1961-69 Neptune WC1 Goldfish 1.7hp
1955 Johnson Sea Horse 10
1962 Mercury 110
1950-52 Mercury Rocket Hurricane
196? Mariner
1952 Evinrude Lightwin
1955 Mercury Comet
1961-69 Neptune WC1.........(partially disassembled)
Other outboards to bring home yet.
1931 Johnson 3hp
1957 Johnson Javelin 35
1957 Lone Star Skipper (has partial restoration done)

That's a great collection. A couple look very much like my old Seagull. Know now where they probably got the idea from. A few years ago I visited a museum in Tallahassee with an excellent collection of outboards. _________________ Due to the onset of my mid eighties I'm no longer sprightly and rarely seen in my Austin special. I have written a book though. https://amzn.eu/d/7rwRRqL |

Hi Stu,
That's a great collection and a good idea to start a thread on them here.
My "collection" just consists of my father's British Seagull 40 plus. It hasn't been run for 40 plus years either.
I vividly recall one family holiday when we stayed at the manse at Ardvasser in Skye. The minister was also the local policeman, postman, game keeper and poacher
He had a wonderful pre war Johnston outboard that he had found under water
He also told us of having to remove the spark plug with his teeth when out st sea one day!

Good story Peter!
Can't imagine anyone using their teeth on a plug.
All of mine do run except for the Neptune which I'm currently working on.
It's going to need a total rebuild.
I'm not sure if the Mercury Comet runs as I haven't tried it yet but it has good compression and spark.
Funny that I didn't start collecting these long ago as I've been around boats for 58 years now.
Here's the boat that the Mercury Rocket Hurricane goes on. The blue paint still needs to removed to reveal the original race number of 9P.

Yes, 12v electric trolling motor.
10 speeds with forward, reverse, & neutral.
Even has a cigarette lighter!
This Mariner is not related to Mercury Outboards.
This Mariner was a different company that sold products through the Montgomery Wards catalog and others.
It was bought new by my Father-in-law in the 60's.
I haven't been able to track down the exact year yet. |
