Over the years I have had damage done by cycles, supermarket trolleys and prams and the annoying bit is there is not really a lot you can do about it. You just have to pay for it yourself and paintwork is not cheap nowadays. What damage have you had done to your car.

One that nearly happened last Sunday.

I got my nice A35 out of the garage as it was a fine day, gave it a wash and took it for a run around some country lanes. At one point on the route I always use to run my cars, there is a blind right hand bend on a single track road. As usual I slowed to a crawl, and then two horses appeared around the bend, ridden by two girls who didn't look much older than about 14 or 15.

The first horse started rearing up before turning sideways in the middle of the road with the teenage rider trying to get it under control. By this point I had come to a complete stop. The second horse wasn't bothered.

The horses eventually went past me, at which point I started to move off. Unfortunately the clutch in this car is rather fierce and because I hadn't driven it for a while, it snatched a bit when moving off. The horse obviously saw the sudden movement as it reared up again, at which point I moved slowly away.

I have heard of the damage caused to cars by a couple of large hooves and have no wish to find out if the riders have insurance that covers them for any more than vet bills. I would have been absolutely livid if they had kicked my car.

In nearly 15 years of living here, this is the first horse related incident I can recall, and there's a huge amount of horses on the roads around here, so not doing too badly really!

I've also had the usual scratches and chips in supermarket car parks as well.

Most responsible horse owners do have third party/public liability insurance. I have dealt with a number of cases where horses have damaged cars, and the damage is often very extensive & expensive.

But, as a rule, just because the horse is involved does not automatically mean it is the horse or horse owners fault. Negligence has to be shown as with more regular accidents.

I did see a truck a few years back that had been hit by the 'Leicester Space Centre'! A section of the ironwork was being delivered and overhung its trailer. The delivery driver doing a left turn, the ironwork took the side out of an overtaking truck.

A friend of dad's once had his Saab 900 written off by rounding a bend and colliding with a horse that was dancing around in the road.

In the late 70's I was driving a Volvo F7 Artic in NE London when about four horses bolted out of a field

I hit one of them, sorry to say fatally, it shot me across the Grass verge and pavement outside a school, this was about 30 minutes after the school run so the pavement was luckily empty

The horses belonged to a group of our favourite mobile families
Of course the horses didn't belong to any of them.

£6,000 damage, and recovery on top of that.

I live on a school run and most residents cars have had their cars keyed, or wacked with school bags, if they are taking any of the school run parking places,

I was once up a lane, in my mini which sounded quite throaty, just normal acceleration spooked a horse which at a junction sat down like a dog on the bonnet of a car behind, following that car was a police car... Whoops!

As much as I like horses, we have had plenty and I have done a bit of riding in the past, if they are not controllable, they should not be on the road.

I was roading a Roller up a lane not so long back for someone, when I saw a horse coming up a drive, seeing and hearing the roller she looked right at me... if she had any sense she would have waited a couple of mins, but being who she was she carried on and turned towards me, on approaching the law says rollers and engines have to stop and wait for the horse to pass, which I did do, but the horse still spooked, and galloped off with the woman hanging on for dear life, through a hedge into the next field. She should not have been riding on the road, as she was not sensible, and not capable and the horse was not suitable.... Only my opinions....

I am very disorganized. I left my four-wheel un-braked trailer un-chocked. The wind blew it into the front wing of Sheila's Panda. Much embarrassment and never living it down ensued.

You are on fire today Larry.

Usual thing, although there was a small, shallow dent on the wing and I could have claimed for another surface scratch on the bumper that already existed, I wanted to keep the no-claims bonus and got my own quote from the Fiat bodyshop.

I should have hung onto the quote because it is the sort of thing you usually wouldn't get to see; it would go straight to the insurance company.

UNBELIEVABLE! The total was around £1400. This included no replacement parts but was mainly the labour to strip off and replace the whole front end to get at the wing and bumper and respray off the car.

I am very cynical and have avery strong suspicion that the work would actually have been masked and done in situ.

Whatever the case, the dent and scratch are still there and now have company in the form of a huge gouge in the nearside sill where she turned sharply off the driveway across a tree stump that has been there for years. Mad My fault apparently Sad

I am now thinking it's probably worth making an insurance claim because the car is only a 2010 reg and looking quite a mess.

Going OT slightly I can claim to losing my no claims bonus without being in the car at the time, which was a little annoying Rolling Eyes
