Reading Emmersons thread that he wanted a Riley RM. What do the initials stand for. I know that GLS and SLX among many others are different models and trim but what do all these letters mean.? _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

It's simple. S is for "Super" or "Special" and G is for "Grande" so GS is "Super Grande" but if it has the "L" then it is "Limited" so GLS would be "Grande Limited Super" so if you have an "SLX" then the "X" is for extras that are not normally in the S or G and certainly never in the "L" unless it is an "SLX", which would have the bits specific to the "SLX" only and include those things that are in the "GLS" or the "GL" but not in the "G". Then there is the "RXT" which is different from the "SXT" and the "SLX" because the refinements in the "R" are different from those in the "SLR" which in turn differs slightly from the "SXT" but can contain some features that are optional in the "SLX" but are not available in either the "S" or the "L". |

Hi
I suppose L is luxe or luxury.
But if you are aware of the habit in Bristol of putting an L on the end of words ending in O or A, we used to joke that CortinaL, VivaL and MarinaL etc were specially named for the Bristolian purchasers.
The name Bristol itself is actually a dialectic development of the earlier name Brigstowe which was of course pronounced Brigsto _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

In Europe the 'L' generally stands for 'Lux'.
The Riley RM, RM I think stood for Riley Motors, and the full terminology was RMA, RMB etc.
Mercedes SLK stands for Small SL (K = Klein = German for 'small') |

To be fair to Riley, they didn't.
The post-war models were sold as 1½ litre saloons, 2½ litre saloons, 2½ litre drophead coupé, and 2½ litre 3-seater sports.
The "RMA, RMB, RMC, RMD, RME, RMF, RMH" were ways of delineating each model when ordering spare parts or seeking service and rebuild information.
There was an RMG but the less said about that the better. |

From Observation TDI seems to stand for Totally Devoid of Indicators, whilst GTI seems to imply Got Two Indicators, though they are rarely used!! |

I have had a number of Ford over the last 50 years. Have got used to the other skit. FORD Fixed Or Repaired Daily. These days' I seem to have little niggles, and usually unrepairable+expensive.
H/AV fan switch. A replacement panel only with all the controls $130 CND
(£80 approx) Warranty
Tire pressure sensors: 2 @ $100+$20 tire remove/replace
Steering wheel gear shift paddle change. Warranty. $ I don't want to know.
None of them on the Ford.
(Sorry, I went off topic) |

Also, words ending in o are male names and those ending in a are female. So you can tell the sex of your car.
