Sometimes the A40 Farina gets referred to as the first hatchback, but the Countryman version had a split tailgate so I don't think that counts. I bet the answer is something French.

Kaiser I think it was the Vagabond about 1950ish. The car still had the shape of a boot but the whole rear panel lifted up very much like a modern hatchback

Hi
If the Traction doesn't count.
Did it have a folding seat by the way?
What about the AC Aceca in '54 or the AM DB2/4 '53

I know it wouid have been too late to be the first, but I think BMC missed a trick by not making a hatchback version of the 1100 particularly when they had developed the drop down seat for the estate version.
