As an admirer of the P2 / P3 Rover, especially the 4 light Sports Saloon. In my view this is one of the nicest medium sized pre-war Saloons.

But somehow that front wing profile on most P2 / P3 does not feel right. Like this:

There have been P2s (P3?) with a more flowing front wing line. On this pic is the car on the far left a Rover?

Which Rovers had the flowing wing line?
I seem to remember years ago a friend had a 16HP Sports Saloon with flowing wings, and thought that was a terrific car.

Definitely a Rover, 1930s by the looks of it, some great details in that old photo.

The top picture is a Rover 12 which was shorter tan the 16

Here is the 16 which is much sleeker than the 12 with a longer bonnet

Just looked at your site 47P2 and much information is there....
Still not sure about the flowing wings. I must visit my old friend again to see if his Rover has those wings or not.
Anyhow, I think the 16 is the better looking with the longer bonnet. Thanks for pojnting that out.
Was the longer bonnet only for the 16 or did the 14 had this as well?
What HP Rovers were the 6 cylinders?

It was probably some sort of styling fashion that came and went. I know with Austin Tens around that time there are a couple of alternative front wing styles that can appear seemingly randomly for a few years. One of them is very like the flowing one.

Both the 14 and 16 had the longer bonnet to accommodate the 6 cylinder engine. The P2s in the above pictures were from 1937 to 1947 earlier models like your picture above would most likely be the P1 which was earlier

The Rover in the 2nd picture is from 1935 (offset screw in the hub-caps and vertical louvres in the bonnet - 1934 had centre-screw caps and 1936 had horizontal louvres!). I am fairly sure there are 5 sets of louvres in the bonnet, so it is a 14hp (4 sets on 10 and 12).

It's a very interesting picture; do you know where it was taken, badhuis? Strange that as well as the cars in the foreground there seem to be several parked on what appears to be the pavement!

Steve.

Hi
That is an interesting old picture of Marlborough, because it appears that there was 2 way traffic on each side of the central parking, which I don't recall from when I used to use it in the late '50s - early '60s, whereas nowadays it is 1 way either side; that is the London bound side.

Put both pics together to make comparisons then and now easier Smile

I find it amazing how much character is lost when chimney stacks and pots disappear from older buildings.
