|
|
We have 2 sky box's, both sky + and one of them HD, both box's are about 3 years old.
Over the last few weeks the HD box developed a fault were some channels reported "A signal could not be received" this seemed quite random some HD channels were fine other "standard" channels got the error message.
The non HD Sky + box worked fine, until this morning when it refused to switch on from standby...
So I'm now under some pressure from the kids, ..."Dad you can fix anything" was mentioned...kids know all the right pressure points!!
Now my background is electronics, but I still Google'd the symptoms, both faults pointed to power supply problems, and specifically poor quality capacitors in the PSU.
So I opened both box's, and sure enough both had swollen capacitors in the PSU (the tops of the capacitors were slightly bulged) I made a note of the values of the swollen capacitors in both box's and nipped down to Maplin, they had them all in stock apart from the 1200uF which they don't stock, so I bought a 1000uF and a 220uf ( wire in parallel to make a 1220uF Capacitor) .
Total cost of capacitors for both Sky Box's was £4.67, it took about 10 mins per box to replace the capacitor's (I soldered the additional 220uF capacitors on the underside of the PCB as they would not fit on the top)
Both box's now work fine .....a lot cheaper than paying Sky to "repair" the box's
PM me if you want some help.
