H
Sometime ago there was a thread about different engine configurations.

I have recently come across this picture.
http://www.guildford-dragon.com/2012/12/17/where-is-this-no-38/mystery-garage/

The answer about the car came later, it is a Gobron Brillie I subsequently had alook at info about these via Wiki.
The engine diagram is most interesting.
2 in line cylinders, 4 pistons, and a single 4 crank crankshaft.

Could that be where the idea for the Commer TS3 came from? They had 3 cylinders and six opposed pistons turning the crankshaft through a rocking beam arrangement

With all that extra stuff connecting the upper pistons to the crankshaft it's not what you'd call inherently balanced! Shocked

Hi Peter

I agree, it also looks as if the 2 cylinders are firing at the same time, unless there is something, perhaps the "revolving petrol distributor" that makes them fire alternatively on a 2 stroke cycle .

Penman,

A couple of things that strike me is the absence of an ignition system and exhaust ports. It does say that there is a 'rotating petrol regulator. As for the ignition, could it be a compression ignition and if so does it pre-date Rudolf's diesel?

An old tradesman of mine used to say "ye cannae trust an engine that eats it's own sh*te"

Art

PS according to Wiki, Rudi's engine dates from 1893 and this is 1898-ish

If I am not mistaken, the Montague Motor Museum (now the National Motor Museum) had a Gobron-BrilliƩ which had a steam-powered fire appliance mounted on it. I seem to remember a write-up on it in Veteran and Vintage magazine in about 1960 or so. Again IIRC Michael Sedgwick took it for a drive and found the fuel consumption was in the region of 4 m.p.g.
