I have just bought the number plates for my 1958 MGA...if you attend shows 99% of cars have pressed aluminium plates, however if you look at period photo's of the early pre war through to the late 60's many car had the white raised plastic digit, or if you were posh the "Ace" raised silver digits.

So that's the way I have gone raised white digits, plate arrived today:

That do look good Dave. Similar to Bluemels Pyramoid which is what was often used in the 1950's and early 1960's, although the font is slightly different, in particular the 6's, 9's and 3's.

Very nice Dave, I've often thought about getting a pair for my car as I think they look great, ...just look at the cheap nasty rubbish they put on moderns, they only have to be exposed to a a slight bit of moisture and they peel apart!

My car has its original pressed black/silver plates so as I want to keep things original I haven't bought any others........maybe I should get some for 'Sunday Best'!

I have no idea how much a set of plates, was charged out at in the 60's. Where i worked, we routinely used Ace silver peak to make up plates, the digits of which lost the peak profile sometime mid 60's i guess. We used to call them Ace silver plateau, as a joke, after the peak became flattened off. The pressed type, were made locally to order, and to my memory, it was generally for use on company cars and vans, like the scores of GUS transport A35's and Staffordshire farmers Morris 1000's. I suppose there was some cost saving, if you were having a lot of vehicles plated, but i don't know the difference.

nice looking plates them .my wifes hillman are silver aluminium letters/numbers held on with one way spring type clips .the ones on the morris are pressed alloy but even they look better than this plastic tat they fit now. a lot of the farmers here if they have new plates made refuse to have them with the EU logo on ,
