Maybe we could have a topic on motoring related articles in the daily papers.
The one that caught my eye today was that people in this country are spending hundreds of pounds trying to get their driving licence yet foreign immigrants if they have a licence issued in their own country can get it exchanged for a British one.Its not their fault but the fault of our system. Surely they must be made to sit a driving test over here if they are to become permanent residents.

Hi
Depends which foreign country they come from.
http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/~/media/pdf/ … INF38.ashx

If they have a full licence then even if they have to take our test they do have 12 mths available when they can drive on their home licence.

Of course some of us would like to see no driving here on foreign licences, but we would have to accept no driving abroad for us as well.

Ferries and the Chunnel shuttle couold carry a lot more on each trip if they only carried semi-trailers without tractor units and we wouldn't then have lorries over here which don't contribute to our exchequer.

Hi Larry. I understand your idea but because I am one of those who believe that the only two factual things in the newspapers are the date and the price, I fear that articles and quotes could too easily be quoted and then unquoted as fact. Google does pick up on phrases and subjects in this forum, which in the main is fairly factual either in the original posting or in the corrected one's thereafter.

The press seems to care little about facts. Our local rag predicted a huge rise in gas/petrol prices, the reasons for which were detailed by various financial and motoring experts. Within a few days the price of oil and then gas/petrol started to fall. They also did the same with property prices, warning that values would decrease, and drastically so. Wrong again.

As for your actual subject. Once I became a permanent resident of Canada, I was able to obtain a Manitoba Driver's Licence. Just a form and of course some $$'s. Canada doesn't have a National Driving Licence. The cost of Motor insurance in Manitoba, is relative to age and Merit points. Merits are awarded to one's driving licence for every year of no-claims or offences.

This meant that my 35+ clean driving record and 60% UK insurance NCB was worth squat. So my wife, (Canadian born and bred) has several motor vehicles and I have none. However my driving licence is also my insurance, so I can drive anyone's vehicle, but would have to cough up a larger $ amount deductable in the event of a claim.
