Are RR still at Filton?
When I was an Engineering Student at Bristol, RR had close links with the Uny, and shared some advanced stuff with us, always remember watching them cast the curved jet engine turbine blades, that have multiple cooling bores running right the way through them amazing how they did it.

How things change. When I served in Bomber Command at RAF Wittering, Filton was our dispersal station for exercises, on the other side of the runway to Bristol Aeros. This was a complete mothballed camp which could be up & operating within a day with personnel, transport, & aircraft diverted away from base ' to fool the enemy ' It was as good as a holiday with some good nights out in Bristol. Tough job but someone had to do it, LOL.
Wonder if they still do exercises like that in the modern RAF, cheers,JD. _________________ 1958 Ford Zephyr Mk2 Convertible

Hi JD
I worked on the same side of the runway as your dispersals, and when your birds were engine running it was felt throughout the works besides being heard. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

Hi Penman, we had all the Vs there at one time or another,Valiant,Vulcan & Victor. I remember Bristol had a Vulcan as a flying engine test bed. It came in to land & the shute cam out like toilet paper off a roll, so the pilot gave it max throttle to get off & round again, pulled it back to clear the road, scraped some part on the runway, & blew out the windows off the tall building across the road(university?). The traffic on the road obviously heard the noise, thought he wasn't going to make it, & decided to run into each other to add to the fun. I also saw the X188(I think that was it's designation), the polished aluminium one, carry out taxi trials, & managed to burn out it's Maxaret units so I don't know if it ever flew. Cheers,JD. _________________ 1958 Ford Zephyr Mk2 Convertible

Hi JD
That was a little before my time at BS / RR
Vulcan B.2 XH557 was used by BSEL for developing the Olympus 301 and first flew with the larger engine in May 1961. It was returned to Woodford in 1964 to be refurbished for the RAF.
It was on it's original delivery flight to Filton that it overshot and actually destroyed the Runway Garage which was on the otherside of the A38.
Vulcan B.1 XA894 flew with five Olympus engines, the standard four Mk.101s, plus a reheated Olympus 320 destined for the BAC TSR-2 in an underslung nacelle. This aircraft was destroyed in a ground fire at Filton on 3 December 1962
This was the one we had when I was there.
Vulcan B.1 XA903, surplus to Blue Steel trials, was converted to a similar layout to XA894 to flight test the Olympus 593 Concorde installation. The first flight was on 1 October 1966 and testing continued through to June 1971.[170] In April 1973, XA903 flew with an underslung Rolls-Royce RB.199 turbofan destined for the Panavia Tornado. The RB.199 engine included both the reheat and thrust reverser functions. XA903 was the last B.1 to fly, being retired in February 1979.[171]
The Bristol 188 did fly there were 3 airframes history is here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_188
Interesting to see that it actuall reached mach 1.88
I did see the modified FD2 known as BAC221 which was a test bed for the ogee Concord wing shape. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

Hi Penman, very interesting link. That is indeed the one I remember. 14,000lbf of thrust would give you a fair kick in the back, cheers,JD. _________________ 1958 Ford Zephyr Mk2 Convertible
