Firstly I need to admit I am in sales so probably much more critical than most folk Surprised

My gripe is things like......."morris miner break shoes" or when the description is "phone for details " and sellers who cannot punctuated appropriately ,how do they expect to get the best price for their goods? .

Sorry, but Mrs Tunniciffe my English teacher would be proud of me!!

Dave

I must admit my postings on this forum are not always perfect, more often than not, it's typing errors. Now having made my excuses. In the last 25 years or so I have had to instruct several apprentices and I am convinced the poor English on the Internet is just another sign of falling standards of education.

If I want to read good grammar, punctuation and spelling I switch off the internet and reach for a book.

If you think it's bad on fleabay, try having a look at Gumtree - particularly, for some reason, on listings for motorcycles. Most are very poor and some make no sense at all. Actually I don't think you can beat the older style free ads papers in many ways - that 25 word limit and often no pictures forces advertisers to engage their brains and get to the point Very Happy

There are people who are dyslexic,I'm always wary of poking fun at bad spelling, there but for the grace of God etc.
The phone for description is more like an invitation to buy without going through ebay.

I find it amazing that people cannot copy the trade name off the item for sale correctly. One of the worst seems to be "Bonneville" in Triumph Motorbike listing on eBay. Not only can they not spell it, but they fail to notice it starts with a capital letter.
How can they expect it to be found in a search? Unless the searcher cannot spell either.
I did, by accident come across a program which claimed to search for keywords on eBay even if spelled wrongly. It also claimed to be a sure way of finding bargains with few bids.
Incidentally "glass houses" and "stones" are words that keep buzzing around in my head. But in this thread as well as eBay.
Jim.

If someone had something I wanted to buy I don't think I'd refuse to buy if they can't spell.

I am dyslexic, it was picked up when I was about 14, so I spend far more time ensuring grammar and spelling is right than most folk! Hence I
get frustrated when people can't be bothered to spell or punctuate correctly! Evil or Very Mad

It can be quite funny reading some contributions where their car is stopped by a pair of trousers and their father's occupation was a child.

I quite agree Roger. But you would have to find it by browsing rather than searching. Unless by chance you mis-spelt it the same way.
Jim.

When I am posting I read through it before I submit and if there are any spelling mistakes I just edit it then I submit but the odd spelling mistakes slip through. Laughing What the heck the last person who was perfect they nailed him up. Laughing

It's also creeping into books as well - between the three of them - what is it you're looking for?(a preposition is not for ending a sentence with)
What can you expect when the fount of Queen's English(BBC) can't get their newsreaders to get it right any more!
Do you also notice the feminine gender has disappeared with female managers, actors etc - where are the members of women's lib now?

Good english teached hear but gooder teached up the stair
Cheers,JD.
