I have just been looking at some of the war time conversions on the main site.
I used to work with some one who volunteered for the army at the outbreak of World War 2. His first year was spent converting comandeered civilian vehicles. Many of them were American cars which were converted to ambulances, vans, pick up trucks, and towing vehicles for searchlights and light guns. More up market cars such as Cadillacs, Buicks and Packards were often claimed by military brass and politicians for their personal transport.
The vast majority of the comandeered vehicles were parked up in fields "Just in case". |

My dads SS1 Airline that he had in the 60s was originally owned by Valerio the ice cream manufacturer from Cambuslang and was commandeered during the war.
Many of the mechanics I worked with when I was an apprentice worked at the REME workshops in Lanark. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |
