Good idea.

I don't know what the local ones are eating, curry perhaps, but I made the mistake of parking the Rover close to a tree after washing it a few days ago... Mad

Oh no!

We have been feeding them all day, and clearing a patch of the garden for them to land on, as one tried landing in the snow, and was in the snow for ages! It made me feel cold, though it was probably ok.

Cheers

Dave

We have a bag of assorted nuts that we hang up. We never throw out bread or scraps of food as it encourages mice and rats.

So far today we have had Pigeons, Blackbirds, a Thrush, a Nuthatch, Great Tits, Blue Tits, Long Tailed Tits and a Greater Spotted Woodpecker onto the feeders and the apples we have put on the floor. And I still managed to get into the garage to do a quick job and line up for a couple more! All that and -5 deg C currently and approx 5" of snow! (PS I was also working from home as well!)

Alec, that sounds like a typical day for me in every way.

Mr and Mrs Blackbird in our garden today feasting on half a loaf of stale bread on the table outside - not much wildlife here.

I've had more wild birds on my feeders this winter than last.

I buy 25kg of peanuts , 12.5kg of black Sunflower seeds and 12 kg of good quality wild bird seed every month at this time of year. Yes, it is expensive but well worth it.

Today in snowy conditions the visitors have been : robin, chaffinch, greenfinch, siskin, blue tit, great tit, coal tit, nuthatch, blackbird, mistle thrush, jay, wren, great spotted woodpecker in quantity as well as what I call "the marauders" : collared dove, jackdaw and magpie.

The notable absentees this year have been redpolls.

Bullfinch and goldfinch are rare visitors here and willow and marsh tits which used to visit daily have disappeared for some unknown and sad reason.

Feed them!! Our just help themselves. We have a nice Johnathon apple tree which until two days ago was laden with fruit, all just hanging there waiting to ripen. They would be ready to pick in about 6 weeks. A flock of rosellas descended and now there are only a handful of apples left on the tree.

The birds rip open the fruit in order to eat the seeds inside.

Here is a rosella attacking pears last season.
