Which would you go for, if given the choice and in the market for a car of this size and type?

I think I'd be tempted by an early R4, just because there seem to be so few of them around. Occasionally I see a late example (C reg) around here. Unless I could find a 50s example, I don't see me ever having a 2CV.

My first car was a 2CV4. Had it for a year as a student, loved it. They are called "duck" over here (Netherlands).
I regularly drove R4s in the eighties / nineties. Excellent little cars but for me the quirkyness of the 2CV wins over the relatively boring R4.

Renault 4! I had one as a hire car on a holiday in northern Portugal. I had so much fun chucking it around the very rough roads up there. It was perfect for the job and I missed it so much once I got back to the UK I looked for one to buy - I never did buy one but will never forget it, a complete hoot!

If we are moving away from the original question but still keeping with quirky, European, small, utilitarian car I will bore you again with my preference, Fiat 500.

Mind you, that's not French...
Fiat Cinq cent?

I've always liked the look of an early Topolino....

Renault 4 by a country mile! Owned both - single 2CV multiple R4's the last of which ran as well at 170 thousand miles as when new. I'd love another to remember cornering on the door handles and the incredible economy. The only car I've owned with a different wheelbase each side and thats how they were built.

The 2CV has a much longer and more interesting history. That makes it more sexy and sells it to me.

Peter

p.s. I will admit that the R4 is much more civilised and if I were looking for a car for every day hack use then it would almost certainly be my choice.

Renault 4 or 2CV?

Renault 4 for me but only if had to.

There was a bigger version of the Renault 4 as well, the Renault 6.
