A few years ago a pal of mine wanted a lift down south to just outside Bristol to pick up a motorhome a round trip of about 700 miles. I dont think I could do that now. Blackpool is my stretch now and I usually stop on the way down. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

Not too sure but yesterday seemed a bit of a marathon, mainly because it was done in my 103 Pop.
I drove from Margate to Sevenoaks in Kent, then onto Crowborough in Sussex.....my trusty stead didn't miss a beat |

My longest drive in a day was from Dampier to Perth in Western Australia in 1992 at the end of a mining contract. I was in my brand new Mitsubishi Lancer Coupe. The journey took me 14.5 hours and was probably the stupidest drive I've ever undertaken!
I left Dampier at 2.00am and I was on my own. I arrived home in Perth after a non-stop run (other than fuel and food) at 4.30pm. I almost fell asleep while driving on one of the most boring roads on the planet. To keep awake I had the heater full on until I almost threw up, then the airconditioner full belt until the grille was literally freezing up and the DVD so loud that it nearly burst my eardrums!
I was very lucky, but I'd never do such a stupid thing again! Oh, by the way it was 1000miles (1600km)

In the Austin 10/4: 150 miles to the west country, towing a folding caravan at a maximum of 30mph. Seemed a long, long, way.
In a modern: Canterbury to Milan 700 miles. Only the once though, after that I arranged to stay a night at Lyon... great restaurants. _________________ Due to the onset of my mid eighties I'm no longer sprightly and rarely seen in my Austin special. Ostend, Belgium to Reifnitz, Austria. 770 miles at high speed (up to 150mph) on German autobahnen. Great fun but requiring intense concentration and multiple cups of expresso coffee.
I was much younger then, these days I still make multiple stops but they're not for coffee but to have a pee... |

Belgrade to Tiptree in May1980, the week Tito died, 36 hours with 5 hours at costoms in Dover.
Was a quick costoms turn round that night.
All three wagons loaded with Perkins engines. Made in Yugoslavia with made in Britain on the cases. |

The longest journey I ever did was just before Easter 1979 which I intended doing in my 1973 Triumph Stag but decided at the last minute to do it in a six month old Mini Clubman Estate belonging to my mother.
Day 1
Betws y Coed to Shrewbury
Shrewsbury to Ludlow
Ludlow to Hereford
Hereford to Bristol
Bristol to Exeter
Stopped overnight between Exeter and Plymouth at Ashburton
Day 2 7.30 AM
Ashburton to Plymouth
Plymouth to Polperro
Polperro to Newquay
Newquay to Minehead
Minehead to Cirencester
Cirencester to Cheltenham
Cheltenham to Statford Upon Avon
Cheltenham to Betws y Coed.
I arrived home at 9.30PM, just enough time for a snack and down to the pub for a pint or two. I went to bed feeling tired, yes, but okay.
When I awoke in the morning after "driving" all night and a fitful sleep I could hardly move with aches and pains.
What was the total mileage? I've never worked it out but it can't have been far from 750 - 800 miles.

I went to a meeting at RAF Scampton driving from Glasgow and back again in one day = 640 miles.
By the time I got home in the evening I was shattered, but being shown Guy Gibson's during a break in the meeting made it all worth-while.
As a younger man a friend and I drove a Ford Cargo Box Truck from East Kilbride to Tiptree in Essex and back again to pick up a load of Zodiac boats in one day = 880 miles. |

Caen to Perpignan; so from the top of France to the bottom! about 650 miles, with a trailer, too much really in one day even on the good French roads.
On the way back we stopped at Poiters for an overnight stop.

Hi
Not as far as some of the above, but it felt a long way, riding a 49cc Honda Express, I rode from Cheshire at 4am Sunday morning to Dumfries at about 7 or 8pm, all back roads, and up and over Shap, which I had to pedal all the way up, and then going down with my head out infront down by the front wheel, elbows tucked in and legs and feet over the back wheel, managed to get off the speedo.
Following days were spent riding through Scotland too, round Arran, and back.
Long old trip, but one of the best! |

Because I've never had a modern car and haven't been driving that long I haven't done any super long journeys. The longest journeys I've undertaken so far are:
Southend - Frampton on Severn, Gloucs and back, 320 miles (A35)
Southend - Lichfield, Staffs and back, 312 miles (A35)
Southend - East Kirkby, Lincs via Stalham, Norfolk and back, 370 miles (A55 MK1) _________________ Richard Hughes |

2007. Must admit to being tipsy at the time, Sunday afternoon and clicked a 'buy it now' for a car, paid via paypal, and then looked to see where it was. Falmouth
Left Newcastle upon Tyne 8.30pm the following Wednesday, drove my Landcrab to Falmouth, hitched the other car onto an A frame and onto the back of the landcrab and towed it back to Newcastle. All non stop (apart from comfort and meal breaks at services) - 930 miles. Arrived home midnight on the Thursday, knackered! |

On holiday a few years ago I drove from Florida to Mississippi in a day. 620 miles in a new Buick with a 3.8 V6 and all the toys. The computer recorded 30 miles per U.S. gallon that's about 35 per Imperial gallon |
