Not myself, but my late father who was a pharmaceutical chemist came from a maritime family and his DNA needs were satisfied by a Dauntless class, clinker built gaff rigged yacht built new at Canvey Island on the Thames.

It had the most unreliable Stewart Turner petrol engine.

I don't have the same interest - I'm a country boy who can't even swim. Smile

I've had a few over the years. Everything from small fishing boats to fast power boats. Now days, I prefer older boats to work on and play with.
Currently have a 50's 3-point hydro outboard race boat and an 8' runabout race boat that I built in the 80's.
I plan on bringing home a 1957 Lone Star Skipper 16' with a '57 Johnson Javelin 35hp this coming June from Texas.
My Dad is 78 and is still in the boat business so I have easy access to most anything.

Amongst my 'round tuits' there's a Moonfleet Silver Shaddow. Early 60's.
Next step is to find a period trailer for it and then a Ford straight 6 that I can marinise.

I managed to talk my father into buying a boat when I was a teenager. He never had the foggiest about boats and I wanted something that we could go out sea fishing in. Then when I was in my mid 20s I bought my first boat A Dejon 14' day boat at a cost of £600 and spent a couple of months renovating it before launching it on Loch Lomond, I kept it for the remainder of that season and then sold it for £1500 and bought my second boat a 22' cabin cruiser which I kept on the loch for 9 years before selling. I then decided to let others foot the bill for boating and helped crew for a mate who had a yacht at Inverkip where we were very successful racing on the Clyde

To me boats are like horses - dodgy steering, no suspension and subject to wind.

My father (on the right) had a boat. He wasn't very pleased when I put a hole in it on Loch Morar. Looking at my big sister I guess I was about 10 or 11 at the time. Linking with the cameras thread my camera that I used to take the photo would have been a Zeiss Ikon folding camera that took 8 shots on a roll of 120 film.

A few years later I used to borrow it now and then when I had my Hillman Minx and later still Sunbeam Rapier.

You can just see it behind the black Minx outside the Portsonachan Hotel.

I still have the outboard but it hasn't been started for more than 40 years.
I also have a windsurfer but that hasn't been out for about 10 years due to the effects of heavy use on my carpal tunnels.

I have heard that it would be easier and cheaper to stand under a cold shower and tear up £10 notes.

Thanks Steve. That boat also appears behind my parents' Humber Hawk in this thread: http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/forum/phpbb/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=10304&sid=db3b93715b0feeb16376d4118e8f5b8f

I helped my father make the trailer. The side rails were double decker bus entry hand rails bought from a scrap yard and the rather heavily loaded centre rail was a scaffolding pole. I think the trailer in the Loch Morar photo was borrowed before we built our own.

I still have a boat and catalogued my misadventures from buying it to each trip out fishing off Herne Bay.

It is still sitting out on my front lawn grinning malevolently at me. The moment I get the engine to start again it will be sold.
