Popular Classics was one of my favourite reads at the time.

I agree, Popular Classics was quite interesting with lots of rebuild stories, which I've always liked reading. Your Classic was similar too iirc.

There was a short lived one in 1988 IIRC called Restoring Classic Cars with a glossy cover and that was about it.

The content was poor and written in a haughty superior style which eulogised E Types, Mercedes and so on and sneered at anything else.

I only bought one copy because there was a classic car assessment of various models and I remember when it came to a Ford Corsair the judgement was "... you had forgotten, hadn't you....?".

Coincidentally I actually have an edition of a defunct classic car magazine in front of me now. It's an Autumn 1986 copy of Classic Car Mechanics at 95p.
It has some very good articles including maintenance of Rover p5s, the story of the restoration of a Jaguar 340, how to buy a Morgan and a good history story of the Morris Minor Traveller and how it could be modified.

A good read even today.

Edit. I still have my copy of the first ever Practical Classics from 1980!

My computer skills are very basic and I cannot get to grips with using a scanner so I've done my best and taken a photo of it :

Funnily enough I've just been looking at some of these. I'm under instructions to clear some clutter and have a load of these to dispose of on ebay.
To be honest my attempts at listing aren't going too well I keep finding articles to re-read or pictures to look at etc.

Most of my older classic car mags ended up in the recycling bin, I still have issues 1-12 of Practical Classics in the garage somewhere. Quite why I keep them I don't know. Lots of classic lorry mags have also been chucked in the last year or two, shame but they take up a lot of space :-/

Probably just as well. I often read the old adverts etc and not so long back almost rung up to order a set of heavy duty car ramps.
At £1 17 6d including post they seemed like a bargain.

If we all throw these magazines away, one day the price of good secondhand copies will rise.

A lot of the car and motorcycle magazines that were started by fledgling companies were amalgamated under one umbrella by EMAP (publishing company) in the 1990`s when they purchased the titles.

Popular Classics was started by Nick Larkin and a few others at Bushfield Peterborough ,one of the EMAP offices, after a short while it was amalgamated into Practical Classics after sales were poor.

EMAP also set up Classic Car Weekly as a newspaper type journal.

For cost cutting purposes a lot of the motoring journalists and photographers had to go freelance,so wrote or took pictures for many different magazines.

I used to love reading Popular Classics, a very interesting and nostalgic mag that one. Lots of old photographs and interesting features on the more "bread and butter" type cars. I'm also a big fan of Nick Larkin's writing style and content, the fact he appears to have a similar taste in cars to me probably helps as well.

Here are a couple of other magazines Motoring and Motor. I was a bit too young to buy these first time round, but acquired these from a house clearance...interesting reading.

Nick Larkin is a BMC enthusiast as you mention....oh and old buses as well.

Ah, old magazines such as The Autocar, The Motor etc, they never get thrown out, it's just the modern magazines on older-cars that usually get filed under "b" (for bin) once read. I do keep The Automobile though.

I've a small pile of "Motoring" magazines in here somewhere, must get a page about them added to http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/carmagazines.htm sometime.

I know it is not a classic car magazine but in my twenties and thirties I was very interested in the Hot Rod and Custom scene coming out of the USA and filtering its way over here.

This magazine is still published in the USA but I do not think it is published in the UK anymore.

This dates from 1980.
