The earliest one I can remember was a 1955 Cresta that my uncle from Durham had. The first car my dad had was in 1963 when he had the SS1 Airline. None of my Grandparents had cars.

I had a prosperous uncle who used to buy a new Standard Vanguard every few years. When Vanguard production stopped he switched to Volvos.

In the mid fifties the boy friend of my older sister, had an older brother, who had a 1936 straight eight Hudson Coupe. I caught Americancaritus from that and have suffered from it ever since

The first car I remember dad owning, vaguely, was an MG1100 although it didn't last too long. The grille and cylinder head from it are in the garage here, the latter was used on my A40 for some time in the early 1990s. The MG replaced a 100E that I was brought home from hospital in. The MG's replacement was a pale blue 121 Volvo, ENB 622D, later replaced by Volvo 144S reg SNE 57K then Saab Turbo OND 411W.

The first car I remember was a black Morris Minor Traveller which my father had in 1957 when I was three years old but the ones I remember best and in detail were a fawn or cream coloured Morris Oxford MO and a black Austin A50, GBV 715.

The MO I remember as having what to me was a smiling face because of the chrome on the front end and it's red leather seats.

The A50 because of the transparent column gear lever knob with the gear positions inside it.

A lavender and black two tone Farina Austin A55 followed the A50 but I remember less about that than it's predecessors.

one uncle had a Ford Y which he had from new until he bought a mini van quite soon after they came out, his brother was a Riley enthusiast and I remember various models including a Kestrel and what he called a Continetal which was a 37 and was the actual '36 motor shaow vehicle.

We didn't have a car until I was 17 and we bought a 34 Austin 10 for me to learn on.

Just about remember the Rover P3 Father had in late 1940's early 1950's
Can remember having to walk the kerb in front of the car to get home in the smog in London

Then a Standard Vanguard series one in the 1950's, both were black

Last car he had was a Hillman Minx in the 1960's, he had to stop driving due to health problems.

My Uncle, the only other with any vehicles, had a traction engine licence and motor bike licence, found cars too claustrophobic.

And my Uncles Square Four, he also had a 600 Norton with a box side car for his builders tools.




Love to know if both car and bike are still active.


PS can still remember four adult and two children, three at a push, on and in that combo

D4B if it was an estate and with floor start button it probably was a mk 1 round nose traveller or countryman since it was phased out long before the clubman was designed!
First cars I remember are my dad's green mini which I still have and my grandparents' Morris 1100 mk 1 which sadly I did not keep and would love to know what happened to it!!

One of my earliest recollections was my dad bringing home the Bentley he used to chauffeur in.
He was chauffeur for Colonel Colman of mustard fame and often he was allowed to bring the car home for various reasons and use it. So there we were in our council house with a Bentley outside, trips to zoo took on a different dimension then

I remember my dad having a rover sd1 3.5 v8 which he towed a caravan with and vaguely remember him having a rover p6 before that.

a story my mum told me the other day.....

before she met my dad, she used to hang around with another bloke with a black Jaguar, they wasn't dating, just going out for an occasional drink.
when my mum started seeing my dad (way before I was born) the bloke with the Jag shouted to my dad, 'well now you've got my woman, you may as well have my car, she's used to being driven in comfort' and he threw his jag keys across the pub......my dad picked the keys up and thanked him

he had that Jag for about 5 years, then it got stolen

My late father in law had a thing for cheap cars which I used to get stuck with repairing. When he died he had about a dozen cars parked up with various friends. They included a Vauxhall Victor, an Anglia and a Bedford CF van. At one time he had an E Model Cresta which he said didn't handle properly. I got underneath and found one rear spring hanger had gone up through the floor and only the rear seat was stopping the car from collapsing in the road. Long before I knew him he owned an ex army Canadian Ford V8 woodie. One cold wet morning it wouldn't start. After 15 minutes winding the starting handle he sold it to a passer by for 30 bob £1.50 in modern money
