Hi Guys,

re the Morris 1500 SV as used in the J-van and Oxford MO.

I recently opened up the old boat anchor and found the valve stems quite dry to the point that they were starting to get sticky. This after only two years from rebuild.
This particular engine is a later one where they added a second vent off the oil filler tube. Ive been running it with unrestricted gas flow out this top vent. and quite a lot there is.
So I presume the amount of gas flow through the engine has been restricting the oil mist from reaching the valve stems.

Anyone got any thoughts on the matter?

cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike. What oil are you using?

Called Gulf Western, its an Australian oil type XMP performance 20W50 SH/CD.
Said to be an everyday oil for petrol and LPG engines made prior to 1994.

I would try running on a monograde oil such as a straight 40 SAE.

There's not much lubrication that gets to valve guides in any case; the exhaust ones in particular. The inlets can obviously suck a certain amount of oil mist from the crankcase especially as they wear.

The clearances in the engine may have been a bit tight if you fitted new valves or guides. Is the engine sitting unused for extended periods?

I wonder if the use of something like Redex might help.

Are you thinking that the oil is not 'misting' like the mono grade or older oils.
That was something I had not considered.

When I initially cleaned the block, there was plenty of evidence (gunk all around the tappet chamber) that the system had been working well.
This time though the upper part of the chamber was virtually dry.

I might put the question to the oil company.

If its the oil type causing it, then I will make an oil gallery with jets to supply oil directly onto the stems. That way there's no need to bother with specific oil type.

Its my Morris J-type van and gets used almost daily.
The valves were the original but with new guides. It now has new valves as well. They were certainly not tight. Some carbon was getting into them and gluging things a bit.
