Looking at the word "Bilchrome" on the casting, Bilchrome was a Sheffield based cutlery manufacturer which also at one time, 1950s I think made castings for the car industry.
There is a reference on here from 2010, before I joined, naming Triumph and Massey Ferguson.
Although the block does not at first look like a Jaguar one but it could be from an early 2.4 litre Mark One. The maximum bore would have been 3L in the same way a Jaguar 3.4 has 3.5L stamped on it's block.
One more thing, the horn shown on the first photo is of the type used in 1950s and 1960s Jaguars - as one of a pair. _________________ Starting Handle Expert

It's not an XK block and this one has push rod holes and a side camshaft. It's not pre-XK either. I think you can rule out Jaguar.
Austin A70 is a four cylinder job. From the length of the con rods it must be a fairly short stroke engine so quite modern.
I think it's Humber Super Snipe. Sorry, couldn't find a good web image but I have a drawing that fits your photos.

Humbers were all side valves until '53 when the Super Snipe was the first with an OHV engine which was a 4 ltr Commer truck engine. 1960 on Super Snipe ll/lll/lV had a 2965cc ohv 6 cyl engine. Cheers,JD. _________________ 1958 Ford Zephyr Mk2 Convertible
