Hi Craig
The Morris Register spares department stock them, and ship world wide. They do come up on ebay now and again, failing that they are quite simple to make; all you need is some 5/8" ground steel (often called shafting rod) and there are some off the shelf oilite bushes that are the correct size.
The shafting needs a tapping in the top, and a flat ground about half way down (can be ground by hand) the cotter pins may need replacing and the thrust washers will need to be made to fit. I made some for my Z van last year, it took about 30 mins per side to make the pin. I used an old Series E gearbox lay shaft as it's also 5/8"!!

Gidday Craig,
Where did you end up getting your king pin kits from? I bought a pair off Fleabay but they are the wrong size. Much larger than required.

Mate I tried so many enquiries and I ended up going to a Repco and they tracked down a set out of Vic. Ill try and find out who they got it from. Was a whole NOS set with felt dust covers end caps. The lot. _________________ I really am a nice guy. Just ask anyone that hasn't met me. |

Exellent Craig
If you could do that for me that would be great in the meantime I will try my local Repco and see what comes of it. I will keep you posted with progress.
My old king pins took just on 2-1/2 Tons to press out and the lower ends of both are pretty worn. How much vertical travel do yours show? I am just wondering if i need to shim up the thrust washer.

No worries mate. Mine took nearly 10 ton on our old 35 ton press at work.
As for wear I had just under 1mm wear either side and ground down my old thrust washers and fitted them to the tops . With the new ones to the bottom.. This was a time consuming process but got firm with no movement. But not stiff _________________ I really am a nice guy. Just ask anyone that hasn't met me. |

OK. I Went to my local REPCO this arvo, and although they remembered the sale, they weren't quite sure where they actually got them from . However if I take my invoice into them they said they could work it out from there.
However they did say to give you the part number and if you go to a REPCO near you they should be able to track a set down.
Product name: Genuine Glen Part
Part number: KX12
for: Morris 8-40 1935-48
Hope that helps mate. If no joy I`ll take my invoice in and have them track to dealer.
Cheers

My set cost me $113.30 plus $16.00 freight as it had to come from Vic. _________________ I really am a nice guy. Just ask anyone that hasn't met me. |

Wow- just got back from Repco and was told nil in stock Ozzy wide and that they would need to place the order with manufacturing and was then quoted $156 plus freight
I think I will see about getting my hands on some 5/8" ground rod as per UK Dave's suggestion - I have sourced and priced the bushes already. Once I get all the pricing sorted I will make a decision either way.
Unfortunately it is off to work on Saturday for a month so everything will be on hold until my return. And being a delightful 46 degrees here today the shed is like an oven and is telling me to stay indoors in the air-conditioning.
More on this subject L8R. _________________ Rosco |
