I know who my 1960 Riley 1.5 was sold to but I don't have the details of the supplying garage. It originally had a plate showing a Birmingham registration number and I have the name of the original owner and his address ties in with that. Anybody know of an easy(ish) way of finding out the garage that originally sold the car?

There is a form V888 which will bring you copies of owner history in return for a fiver - when I did mine, I got copies of each V5 that had been issued showing each owners name and address. Of most interest, though, is I also got the original application for a registration number, which showed which garage had originally sold the car.

Of course, the information you get back may decrease the further back in time you go.

BMHT will give you the distributor who may be the end dealer and sometimes this may be shown/deducted

Gentlemen - thanks for your comments.

I'll take my chances and send off my fiver and a completed V888. Trouble is the car has had it's number changed at some time in the past (I have full details) so I'll have to request two. Now, if the original number is on another car nowadays then that's a whole new can of worms.

Thought about BHMC and have now emailed them to find out what they need etc. I presume there'll be a cost (there's a cost for everything nowadays) so lets see what all this brings.

I have an idea that you just request the V888 for the current registration and the magic of the DVLA computer will do the rest, but I can't remember where I read that.

Correct on the photocopying thing, though - when they were transferred to microfiche the quality is sometimes quite poor. But interesting, and might be enough to narrow things down.

Actually managed to speak to someone decent at the DVLA this morning and yes I have to submit two requests for each registration number even though it's for the same car. It's therefore a tenner as opposed to a fiver. So, they'll be in the post today and it'll be interesting to see what comes back. Hopefully, more than I know already.

I think you've been given the wrong information. I sent off a V888 for my A55 Cambridge under its age related number, and was sent scans of past V5's (although only going back to 1988). I later sent another V888 under the original registration, explaining carefully about the new registration of the car and why I wanted the information. The drone at the other end ignored all this and sent my form and cheque back to me, saying "we have checked our records and you are not the registered keeper of this vehicle" i.e. they had typed the original number into the computer, found I wasn't the registered keeper of a car with that registration and sent it back to me. Also, some of the paperwork I was sent didn't even relate to my car, it related to a lawnmower or street sweeping machine owned by Neath Council in South Wales! Useless.
