A DKW Auto Union, A very rare cabrio model.

Don't know much about them I'm afraid, apart from being three cilynder two stroke, but well worth saving.

There is a DKW owners club in the UK that may be able to help you: http://www.dkw.org.uk/index.html

late 1940's -early 1950's probably an F89 and could be 2 cyl T/s as opposed to the later 3 cyl F91 Sonderklasse 3=6 which grew into the wider F93's and then the Auto Union 1000 They did 2 and 4 door saloons, 2 door pillarless Coupes, Estate/shooting-brakes and vans + the Munga (jeep type)

My dad and his mate had them in the 1960's and I had a later 1961 1000S 2 door panoramic Coupe

Also had a AU 1000 Universal (estate). The blue one is the F91 Sonderklasse (now in County Kerry)

They were very fast smooth and quiet for the time and handled very well indeed with their transverse leaf springs , rack & pinion steering especially on Michelin X radials

That is me in 1972 with my dads 1960 1000 2 door Coupe (flat screen)

He had a 1964 DKW F12 a smaller neat 2 door car axed by VW when they bought AU/DKW from Mercedes Benz as it competed too well with the Beetle - the last AU 2 Stroke F102 was the forerunner of the Audi 80.

The 1960's cars had Lubrimat automatic oiling to avoid mixing T/s oil manually. Some also had a Saxomat automatic clutch.

Some of the factories were in E Germany and were taken over by IFA who carried on making the F89 shape which eventually turned into Wartburgs

There was a really smart 1000SP sports coupe complete with fins in the early 1960's looked a little like a Daimler Dart

All were Front wheel drive and had lockable freewheels so gear changes when moving did not need the clutch

Although i know little about the DKW, we had quite a few around Derby in the 60's. An old school mate who lived opposite, was an apprentice at the Derby dealers, Greaves and Welch, who also had a VW franchise.
One of the partners raced a DKW sports car. Was it called a Le Mans, or is my memory wrong? Anyway, it was a rapid little thing, although like a lot of tuned two strokes, prone to hot seizing. My pal, unfortunately died quite young, so i am unable to ask for information. Nice little car, i hope the restoration goes well.

Well some of them would have been my dad's and his mates. There were several.

I used to go to G&W with them - in those days it was just off a major roundabout on the main road - road "improvements " of the late 1960's cut direct access off leading to its closure in the early 1970's and I went a number times just before buying up old spares.

I started work in 1973 only yards from the place by then closed and boarded up and was there for the next 20 years. In last 5 years the access that closed them has been restored to assist traffic flow.

I used said AU 1000 for quite a spell in the 1970's but youth/marriage etc ended up selling my last 1000S in 1993 after I decided I liked Rover P5's more.

I really hope the F89 can be restored - they are very rare but quite a few remain in Eire

Said dad's mate grasst-racked a cut down F93 Coupe at Widmerpool ?in the early 1970's. Classic cars did not exist then only old bangers and vintage/veterans with some of them dubious death traps

The V screen carried on till the F91 3 cylinder as did almost the same "wood"dash board. I think the blue F91 (4 EHK) was a 1955 by then known as a little 3-6 as opposed to the wider big DKW 3=6. This still had the rear hinged doors (as did the 4 door saloons till the end) with a tin dash but the similar AU 1000 Coupes had modern front hinged doors. F91/F93's had the boot lid alloy strips and steel painted bumpers with a centre chrome strip - 1000's had full chrome bumpers (W German chrome was terrible!) and plain boot lids. F91 and on were all a nice column change and no transmission tunnel or front passenger well

I pulled apart, rebuild, destroyed quite a few of them in that time and knew everything about them. I and my dad were members of the DKWOC founded 1953 and the rallies were quite big. Went to the last one in 1984? on the day Prince William was born - there were 6 - we were in my new Vauxhall Astra Embarassed
