I am an admirer of Fords, as some of you may have gathered, although the only one I own now is my everyday vehicle, a Ford Ranger 4x4 single cab pick up. The Mark 1 Escort has interested me since it's introduction in 1967 and the range of sporting ones - 1300GT, 1300 Sport, Mexico, Twin Cam, RS1600 and RS2000 adds to the interest.

But of all Mark 1 Escort variants the one that really interests me is the 1300E. A 1300 GT engine and instruments, wood veneer interior, plush carpet and special paint colours all contribute to what is a handsome small Ford.

Introduced in 1973 in only two colours - metallic purple and amber gold - and two door only at first the range grew to include a handy four door and more paint options.

The last one I looked at closely was many years ago. The local joiner was doing some work at home in the Autumn of 1986 and had enlisted the assistance of a friend.
He was about to emigrate to Canada with his family and he had a purple 1974 M registered 1300E, 2 door which was actually for sale. It would have made a good partner to the 1967 Mark 1 1100cc van I had.
£250 was the asking price, it was in good order and I still, today, kick myself!

Of the 11,000 that were built I wonder how many remain.

Certainly a nice car to drive. Gear change was a delight, performance and handling were reasonable but outside appearance was BORING in the extreme.

My 1st car was a mk1 escort that with it's vinyl roof was painted to look like a 1300e although a lad at the end of our road had a lime green mexico which I lusted after although it was stolen 7 times in 2 years .

in a previous house, not sure exactly what year, a neighbor had a mk1 exactly like that one, same colour, same model.
it only had delivery mileage and was never used by him. when the mk4 was launched he borrowed it to a local ford dealer to place in their showroom.
he ended up swapping it for a mk4 rs2000 (i think it was as rs), no money changed hands, a direct swap.
that car was stuck in his garage just like the mk1 and is still there. what a shame eh

Was that the Ford garage that used to be by the traffic lights on the A5 just off the centre of Llangollen?

no, its was the ford dealer in oswestry.
i do remember the one you mention in llangollen having a sierra sapphire in the showroom, unregistered with delivery mileage on it. the garage owner died and he had a large collection of cars at his house on the A5. his family still live there so the cars are probably sat in abarn somewhere local.

IMO the 1300E was the definitive Mk1 Escort. It followed on from the Mexico and Sport models. It was finished in 'new colours' for the time, Purple Velvet was particularly good with the satin black rear panel. Lots more soundproofing, wood etc. Had the petrol crisis not intervened there may have been a 1600 version.

Certainly, having a 1300E on the driveway was very satisfying.

I learnt to drive in a Ford Escort MK1,very good driving school cars at the time.
I had a lady instructor (family friend) who in the early 1970`s wore short skirts and plunging necklines.
You can imagine the distractions I had trying to concentrate on my driving.

Hi GF
Back in the mid-late '70s I instructed in a Mk1 1100, when the clutch went the boss told the garage to fit a 1300 one
