OK I`d like to ask a question so I hope it doesn't invoke having me chased out of the forum with pitchforks and flaming torches, as a heretic.
Has anyone found a suitable substitute wheel for the Morris 8 E series so as to put a slightly more modern style tyre on? I don't want to put some 10" tyres, just maybe a 5.5" radial
I live and drive on crappy country back roads and would mind finding a more suitable wheel and tyre(as well as easier to get).
Cheers
Craig

Hi Craig

I have never seen any other wheels, there can't be many vehicles that have the same PCD with 6 studs?

On the pre series Morris 8's , the Australian spec cars had 16" rather than 17" wheels, but were wider, was this also the case for the SE?

5.50x16 and 4.5x17 have the same rolling radius.

My DLM used 4.5x17s on the front and 5.5x16's rear. apart from rim and width both the same size overall.

I've dreamed of different wheels too Embarassed

You can order Mags without stud holes and then have them drilled to suit so that is probably the way to go.

I've got a spare set of mags in the shed and wheeled them out to see the effect Rolling Eyes

Impressive if not exactly classic!

Oh vomit no. LOL
Was more thinking down the lines of a thin 6 stud 4x4 steel wheel. My Colorado as well as some other models have a steel wheel that looks very similar to the Morris wheel, but they dont t make a skinny version and most 6 stud wheel patterns are large
compared to the Morris.

One could Frankenstein a set by cutting the middle welded section from the Morris wheel and transplant it on to a donor wheel, but accurate alignment would have to be paramount. And possible extra wear on wheel bearings due to heavier wheel to be considered.
Guess Ill just have to think on it more.

The one thought I did have was using a set of those modern spare wheels you get in small imported cars. Mosttyres for them are only rated to 100kph and as it for a 8hpcar?????? Studs patterns still the problem thoug h.

Hey is it not possible to use the old rims and just change the tyres? I know mod tyres are not made to be used with tubes but despite that a few if the guys on our xmas rally have done exactly that and fitted 175-16's to there S1 and 2's so they were more comfortable and safe to drive most of the length of the country to be at the rally. Surely its possible to find some 175-15's to fit the E out with? Just a thought...

I do realise that some countries had different size wheels fitted to the models they got. But my E series has 17" wheels and takes a 4.50 x 17 tyre. I have a tyre outlet manager for a next door neighbour and apart from vintage spec tyres , you just cant get a 17" tyre small enough to fit.

Why not scout around for a set of Series 2 Easiclean export wheels, 5.25 x 16"? These would look virtually identical to all but the most critical eye. A good many NZ-based 35/S1/S2 Eights are fitted with radial tyres that are a hell of a lot cheaper than cross-plies, and owners report favourably regarding ride, steering, etc.

Even with cross-plies the larger-section 16" Export wheels give a better ride on dirt roads than the 4.50 x 17" (I have an English-model S1 Tourer which of course has the 17" wheels).

Funnily enough I suggested to a Morris Register member (8MVS) recently that they try radial tyres , it was a tad tongue in cheek Smile I was fishing to see if using a radial would have advantages , and to see what experience other member had of fitting radials .... ? But got zero response to my post ..

I was suggesting using space saver radials , are there other tyres suitable ?

Hullo Dave,

Yes, I saw your 8MVS post but didn't contribute to the thread because I'm inclined to think it wouldn't help in Nick's case.

Sorry, I've no idea what cross-section the 16" radials are, but could enquire in a few days when people get back from the M8TC rally in Christchurch. Personally I think they look ridiculous on an Eight, like Mickey Mouse with his great fat boots on spindly little legs. I understand someone imported a quantity of these tyres at knock-down prices from somewhere in South-East Asia. They're proper full-service tyres, not space-savers.

One friend has radials on his Series 3 Twelve. Again, they look all wrong but seem to work well enough and were a lot cheaper than equivalent cross-plies, which of course are now specialised items.

Plenty of tyres designed to be space saver's available in that size. trouble is you would be limited to 80 MPH Wink

M8TC, MR Auckland, MR GB—you name it, if it's Morris I'm in it.

Whereabouts are you?
