Mention of the Anglia that a neighbour had when I was a nipper, got me thinking about the other cars in the road at the time, say mid 70s.
From memory, they went as follows:
- next door (rhs) Mk1 Ford Consul, resident til early/mid 1980s
- at the time dad owned a Volvo 144S
Continuing up the road, on our side still:
- Anglia, then a new chap moved in with an early Manta
- Austin or Morris 1100, immaculate
- Hillman Imp, in gold
- Marina
- Mk1 Ford Cortina, 4dr, dark blue, again in VGC
- Hillman Avenger in silver, must have been Jubilee time
Then on t'other side of the road:
- Yellow Fiat 127, later replaced by an S reg orange Allegro estate
- Toyota Crown and a mid blue MGB GT (rubber bumper)
- "Jeans" VW Beetle, owned til mid/late 1990s
- Fiat 126
- Cream Minor (we had a ride in it when we set out to see the Queen drive by in '77)
- Possibly the best condition Marina super I've ever seen, it replaced a Moskvitch or Wartburg estate
- One of the first Range Rovers
The rest I don't remember. At the time, my uncle was running a Cox GTM, followed by a Saab 99 fitted with a Dolly Sprint engine (!)

Next door neighbour had a couple of heralds in succession, first a mustardish sort of colour 1200 than an 13/60 estate in dark blue, similar shade to my hunter, then the estate got replaced by a Lada samara of all things!!!
On the other side of our house resided a very nice austin 1100 mrk2, later on replaced by a daewoo!!! Still have the AA badge off that 1100s grill on my surf blue min!!
Further down there was a Fiat 1500, 1 owner from new in very nice condition which also got replaced by crap, a skoda 120!!!
Across the road there was a Fiat 850 saloon, later on replaced by a fiat uno mrk 1, a hillman hunter replaced by a toyota corolla estate and a lovely mini kept in very good condition but later replaced with a mitsubishi lancer!!!
My mum's street is made up of lock ups mainly not much neighbours but I do remembr some of the cars in the lock ups, mainly another mrk 4 mini, a 60s opel kapitan, a 1st geneation honda civic, fiat 127 sports, cortina mrk 2, another mini this time a mark 1 in a sorry state, a mark 1 escort belonging to an old chap which only got sold recently when he gave up driving and surely there are more that I cant remember off hand!! |

Being a bit older that some of you, my recollections are from the late 50's and 60's.
Cars included:
My Dad's over the years:
Ford 8
Standard Flying 12
Austin A30
1960 Anglia 105E
1963 Vauxhall Victor FB
1965 Cortina de Luxe Automatic
Neighbours:
1963 Skoda Octavia. Its elderly owner had bad feet and put the accelerator to the floor permanently and controlled its speed with the clutch!
1965 Humber Sceptre - loved the dashboard
50's Morris Minor
Very early Triumph Herald
1950's Vauxhall Wyvern, replaced by a CA Bedford Utilecon with seats for 10 kids in the back. I used to be taken to school in it occasionally.
A young couple with a 1963 MGB, before they had children when it was replaced with a Morris Oxford.
1964 Austin Cambridge that was issued at no charge with the reg no 1KO (now owned by Chris Eubank)
Black Standard 10
1958 Black London Taxi
Standard Vanguard Mark 2 (the one with the boot) It reg No was FAG and Camel Cigarettes gave him a carton of cigarettes every year to carry a Camel sticker in the back window.
In the big houses opposite
Zodiac Mark 2 with the biggest badge bar (probably 12 badges on it!)
1950's American Chrysler - a sort of four door coupe
Two tone green and cream Zephyr Zodiac Mark 1. I remember showing them the Corgi model I had that was the same colours and they weren't in the least bit interested.
One house replaced their Rover P4 almost every year and then upgraded to P5's. When he retired he kept his last P5 Coupe from 1965 to 1997 when he died.
Thanks for prompting these memories that have remained dormant for almost 50 years! _________________ Brian

When I was a kid and my dad had a Hillman Husky from his work and our immediate neighbours were both ex-army majors. Neither of them drove much but one had a silver Triumph Renown and the other had 20/25 Rolls.
The houses didn't have garages but the Rolls guy built one out of old railway sleepers on a railway embankment just up the road. He fancied himself as an artist and painted some very large village views which completely covered the inside of his garage walls. They were pretty awful with bad perspective. The garage was quite small and you certainly couldn't open the Rolls doors both sides.

In 1959 just before I got my 1st car (1948 Jaguar) there were only two cars in the street. A 1934 Standard 10 and a '53 Ford Prefect and they managed to crash into each other at a tee junction down from our house.
As an aside when I got the Jag. The mobile shop guy complained to the cops that we were causing and obstruction and we had to get it off the road. This involved digging up a pretty mature privet hedge and the kerbing. Once the car was in the front garden it sank up to the hubs. We could even get a jack under it. Took weeks to dig it back out.

Mr McQuade had a lovely Riley RM series which was red with the black roof and wings. Possibly where I got my liking for the RM series
'Auntie' Betty had an Anglia deluxe which was light green over OEW and went as far as the shops and back.
Tom had a 1965 Zodiac in dark blue and was stunning
Bert was a VW Beetle fan and tinkered about with his old VW patching it up every weekend. He won the Littlewoods coupon, about £12,000 and bought a brand new Beetle and hated it.
Frank the macho man with the chest wig had a Humber Sceptre which had every accessory you could think of fitted, from wheel spinners to a sunvisor, then when fibreglass aerials arrived that was fitted too.
Flash Danny had two Daimler Series 1 XJs one was brown the other light blue, but before the XJs he had a couple of MkII Jags (see below)
There were lots of Austins, A35s, Cambridges a Westminster and an A40
A couple of Triumph Heralds, A Humber Super Snipe and a Hawk, Fiat 500, Land Rover.
Someone in the 70s bought an NSU RO80, how posh was he!!!!!
This was my fathers 220B Mercedes and Flash Danny's Jaguar in the background

Just dug out a couple of old photos. One, early 60s, shows next door's motorbike and sidecar, and our converted Morris Cowley van/estate. A later one shows me by my Standard 8, with J4 and CA vans parked on the other side of the road. At this time (late 60s) the amazing thing was the variety of cars that were just parked in the road (largish terraced houses but no garages)
I can recall
Us - Old A135 Princess (swb version of limousine)
Next door had moved up to an A35 van conversion
Next door other side Sunbeam Rapier
Various small Fords, mostly 100e Anglias
Highlights were the neighbour opposite who had a Mercedes 190SL which never moved but he was going to restore (and a Bedford Luton )
and the house on the corner of the next road where the owner had done sufficiently well from a jellied eel emporium to run an 'Adenaur' mercedes which he had owned from new

When I 'were a nipper' (like Rick, mid 70s) in our little Cheshire village I can remember among the more boring stuff;
The elderly vicar's Vauxhall Ventora
Replacement vicar's Minor Traveller (which when all gears exept reverse went he drove everyhere in reverse for two weeks!)
Hippy neighbour's Bond Bug (tangerine orange, of course)
Local market trader neighbour's collection of NSU RO80, Isetta and fastback Sunbeam Alpine
Schoomaster's VW Camper
Local jack-the lad's Hillman Avenger in Starsky and Hutch Torino paintjob
Cub Scout mistresses Austin A60 'Farina'.
And our own family 1970s history of Triumph Herald estate, VW Devon, Rover P6 2000TC, MG Midget and B roadsters, Hillman Hunter estate and my brothers snot green Viva |

A near neighbour of ours was Des Tilley so a London/Sydney and Mexico marathon Landcrab and a Triumph 2.5 p.i. was commonplace in the street!
I think they were sponsored by Vantona Everwear. Bullbars were pretty impressive stuff but considered overkill for Welsh mountain sheep!
Other neighbours had more ordinary stuff. Sunbeam Rapier, VW Beetle, Standard 10, Morry Thou etc. Oh! there was an Armstrong Sidley Star Saphire just around the corner. |

In 1980 I was staying in Reading while working nearby. A large house on the A4 London Road had a coach house at the bottom of the garden from which on a monthly basis emerged an Allard P2 Monte Carlo. The elderly gent went out for about an hour each time, battery charging run I suppose, and once I just happened to be on hand to say hello, nice man nice car nice rumbling V8 noise! |

I can't really remember much of interest tbh, but then I'm not very old! Growing up in the 90's I remember a Vauxhall Chevette on my walk to school, two more derelict Chevettes and a Morris Minor corroding into a driveway, and a rotton Ford Anglia (still there!) Then there were all the usual Sierras, Metros, Montegos, etc. Next door but one was an old lady who had a grey Rover P4 that came out occasionally, she had a vintage caravan going green in the back garden as well that I could see out of my bedroom window.
Then the people who lived opposite my grandmother in Chester had a Morris Minor Traveller and an Austin 7 Box Saloon _________________ Richard Hughes |
