coming up to first year of ownership. still having issues with fuel. on sorn at moment and MOT about to expire..cash already expired..
fitted new plugs. electronic ignition. new fuel pump, filter, carb over hauled.
start with half throttle badly. runs badly until running 20-30 seconds.
then runs but only with nearly full choke at minimum 1500 rpms or shuts down. white smoke from exhaust I suspect is unburnt fuel.
paid far too much for it sigh. not sure where to go to sort running issues.
thinking of a colortune device maybe in each cylinder try and see if any are not burning or firing correctly.
looks like its not going to be on road much this year at this rate...checked carb fully before refitting, all gaskets new. floats good. new float level fuel valves fitted with rubber tips as supplied in kit.
no point putting pics up until damn thing gets out of my cramped garage.
shame a sit is my retirement hobby and so far only managed less than 130 miles in a year. |

It could be stale petrol - white smoke is usually because it is drawing brake fluid in from a leaking servo. The changeover tap can block if P6's have them as can the pickup gauze in the tank _________________ Rover P2

I'd try Ricks suggestion and rig up a temporary fuel supply that will take the change over tap, pipes and filters out of the equation.
A Colortune will tell you if fuel is getting through but even though i sell them I find the plugs are almost as good as diagnosing faults in fuel quantity to each cylinder. I had problems on my V8 with the O rings on the starter (or choke) valves allowing excess fuel and air in. The engine would run but was far too rich at low revs with clouds of smoke. _________________ Thirty years selling imperial hand tools for old machinery(Now happily retired). |

Checked fuel system as all electrics are good. New fuel filter fitted with electric pump. Engine. Finally got to run around 800-900 revs when hot,
Then fuel was being ejected under car.
One carb overflowing.. Turns out to be sticking float...no new float or pivot pin available and a rework su hif6 costing approx£220 plus postage.. Prevents getting it sorted easily.
Managed using a gunson car balancer to get engine running almost smoothly..one carb needing no adjustment etc. other carb( one that float sticks in ) found to be almost impossible to adjust!
Looking at local breakers etc for a spare carb..( rocking horse poo comes to mind) so I can nick a float etc.
Might ask SU the conditioner if they are wiling to supply these parts only.. See if carb cab be set up. This is fairly certain the only thing stopping engine running well. |

Thanks to all who try to assist .summer on wY so need to get it rolling soon. |

update on rover.. rear brakes now o with new pads and discs. handbrake passes mot ( just) , checked engine vacuum at 21 mm hg so seems ok!
not rechecked vacuum unit yet but assured it works perfectly...still not happy with power as acceleration lack luster. ( wife beats me in her fiesta ggrr)
only issue other than lack of grunt is power drop off after stopping for a pint. think its likely petrol vapour issues. clears after couple of minutes driving all of a sudden ..like a button being pressed for turbo.
wonder if other rover p6 owners having or had such issues? |
