The subject of high costs for Scottish deliveries arose on another topic yesterday.
If you live elsewhere in The UK you may not be aware that it is increasingly common for mail order items to cost significantly more to be delivered to certain postcodes. Whilst some of these destinations are on islands or very remote, usually any Highland postcode attracts a surcharge This is despite the fact that Royal mail and Parcelforce (CURRENTLY) charge the same to anywhere in the UK.
I have experience of cheaper deliveries from Northern Ireland, Holland and Germany than I get from England; and one of these weighed in excess of 40 kg!
At present, I can at least say that we are all in the same country and this seems unfair and amounts capitalisation on the situation. It seems likely that the situation may get worse if the country achieves "independence" this year.
Bearing in mind the proviso that I was not born in Scotland, might I add this small factor to the many thing for Scots to consider before making their vote on independence this September.

Currency options:

Keep the Pound: Means rule from Westminster
Resurrect the Groat: Home Rule but nobody will want to know us.
Change to the Euro: Means rule from Germany

When we go independent perhaps deliveries from Germany will be cheaper.

Hi Stuart/Peter. I came across this problem with postal charges yesterday.
The company involved had a list of post codes for a surcharge for deliveries to the Highlands. Included in the listing was FK(Falkirk) & G(Glasgow) both of which are in the Central Belt. They weren't too pleased when it was pointed out that POSTAGE charges are the same through out the UK(as stated by Stuart) & their surcharges should only apply where they were surcharged by the courier/parcel delivery companies. If the independence vote is for yes there will probably be customs charges as well. Afraid I'm with keeping the UK as is. Cheers,JD.

I think the proposal to make Scotland the 51st state is gaining momentum, so shipments across the pond will be cheaper for you.

Peter, i did recently get "free" delivery from Germany to Scotland on a heavy £125 item which, with delivery, from England was going to make the same item cost £170 in total.

I just don't want to be ruled by Mr Salmond et. al.

I just sold a turntable on ebay. I can send it anywhere in this country for £7 but to post it to Switzerland would cost £40, that is a 10kg weight.
Switzerland isn't very far, 460 miles from London whereas Newcastle is 300. That's straight line, bit further by road.
By 'this country', I include John o groats and Kirkwall. This is myhermes.co.uk, I like them, the price includes collection from my house. Myhermes don't do abroad, royalmail are several times the price

You're doing the fair thing Peter, by using the best service to help your purchaser. What happens with Scottish destinations is usually a "take it or leave it" attitude by suppliers who casually request up to 3 or 4 times the postage advertised to English destinations. There are exceptions such a Screwfix, B&Q etc., but most things from business suppliers on EBAY are a waste of time and money because of this.

That seems very unfair. I made £2.8 on the postage but as I spent 2 hours at least packing it securely I think that is not unreasonable. Bits of polystyrene all over the kitchen afterwards.
I was surprised that myhermes deliver everywhere for the same as I am so used to seeing that postage to Scotland, particularly the north, is always more

Would it be cheaper for you to get stuff posted to England and then forwarded on? That would be really silly

I have actually done that on several occasions...stuff from IKEA, classic oil and a set of stainless bumpers. I pick them up when visiting family.....and they say the Scots are mean Laughing
