... where would you advertise it?

- club magazine(s)
- traditional "classic car"-type magazine from the newsagent
- internet auction
- internet sales site
- "traditional" auction
- word of mouth
- local newspaper
- sign in the window and park it somewhere prominent
- part-ex with a dealer for something else

Given that years ago most people would probably opt for an ad in the Autotrader weekly paper, or a monthly specialist magazine, the options now are much more numerous.

Perhaps the choice comes down to the type, age or value of car being sold?

Car and Classic website is where I have sold my old cars previously, I still check it daily. I have also used Classic Car Weekly prior to the internet, I still would, it's free.

Club magazine (which I edit) as a lot of Rileys change hands among club members. I have several members already asking for first refusal on my 1.5 so I may not even need to advertise.

I sold a lovely Hillman on Ebay a couple years back, the buyer didn't view it and asked very few questions. He then had it picked up by a transport company so I never actually met him. About a week or two later though I had a few rather unpleasant emails about the cars condition.

It was very tidy having been restored about 10 years ago but had been dry stored without test for about 6 months when he bought it. He was very unhappy that there were problems when it came to testing her. The problems being a tyre and rear hub seals!

I take it very hard selling on a classic and like to meet and almost 'vet' a potential buyer to make sure he/she is the type to look after the car.

I have always found it very hard to sell a car. I have tried all the media, even made websites for cars to sell. Maybe it is because the cars I sold were not mainstream cars, so probably of interest to only a small public.

Very hard to sell was what I call a modern car from my father, a 10 year old Mitsubishi in as new condition, low mileage and full service history. After advertising it for a month everywhere just nobody was interested so it got away for very little money.

The other side of the medal is that I used the same principle to buy very cheap cars, off the mainstream path. This goes for classic and modern cars.
6 months ago I bought my modern car, a 12 year old one owner top of the bill (6 cyl, auto etc) Subaru Outback with all the extras, full service history, low mileage for almost scrap money. I hope to keep this one for years to come.

I know this goes against the stream, but, the value of a vehicle is 'how much the next person will pay for it'. There seems to be rumours of how much vehicles are sold for, I have seen adverts for extreme prices, but that is not how much they are either worth, or fetch. Not a huge fan of e-bay for selling or buying vehicles through, I like to look at them, but they do give a reflection of the true value, for that vehicle only. The next one might only be worth 2/3rds as much, if that is all the bids get to. So my view is, you may believe your pride and joy is worth a pension, but if it does not sell for that, then it is worth how much you get, which usually is a lot less!

i havn't sold a car for years,but gave a couple away to mates.whenever i sell a motorcycle,i do it through a mate who is a trader..can't be doing with some of the types who come to view.once,a couple of geezers came down from Liverpool and tried it on.they had a wasted journey.and a trader came up from London,and tried to knock the price down despite our agreed value over the 'phone.he panicked when i shut the garage door and went in home soon had him scuttling back to his van for the proper money.

Tried my Bedford CF on the owners forum not a sniff, put it in the Auto trader phone never stopped, I feel its fickle you just never know, if the Gumtree ads on telly then Gumtree

I guess I am somewhat lucky sine my "thing" is rather specialist in that they are replicas and the last two cars I have sold were by word of mouth via a couple of garages, and both sold very quickly. I have even had a couple of calls in the last six months enquiring if I want to sell another since they are hard to find. But God forbid I should think of selling my E-type. She's a part of me.

Used Gumtree to unload SWMBO' s last car and would use again. Very easy to make a professional looking advert and its FREE
