Sometimes PCs drive me potty. My usual PC is only 15 months old but now runs like a dog that's on its last legs, so I'm reverting to my ancient XP machine (slow and clunky itself) while I dig around on the newer one to fathom out what's up.

PCs have their uses, but when they go awry I'd willingly chuck them out of the window.

I bought a Mac as the "home" PC some 5 years ago; it just runs, without any maintainance or drama that every other PC or Laptop I have ever owned has presented.......

Can't say I'm a fan of MS software to be honest, seems very bloated and more than a little wobbly.

I cleared down the Recycle Bin, changed a/v software, and ran a spyware checker that detected a couple of files it wasn't happy with. They came as part of an old FTP program that I no longer use, so quarantining them wasn't an issue, and touch wood it seems to be running better (famous last words...).

The problem I'd have switching to a Mac would be the cost of replacing all the software I use on a regular basis.

My current PC was built locally to my specification and has run fault free for almost three years though I do seem to work through laptops fairly rapidly - hard drive failure usually.

Anything file-related, like deleting something in windoze explorer, just hangs the machine for ages while it figures things out. Useless.

At work, the stock answer from our help desk is; "we need to rebuild it " Confused Fair play they do this over the network these days, so there is no waiting for an engineer, I reckon most pcs get rebuilt every 18 months Shocked

I think the solution is to use cloud apps & storage, that way all the PC has to do is work the browser Rolling Eyes

My PC's on borrowed time then! I use it to write, edit and layout a club magazine so it needs to be glitch-free at all times, especially during the couple of weeks leading up to publication date when it's on 24/7.

My current laptop is having its screen and lid replaced; wobbly hinges are a known fault and it's been overdue for a fix. Dropping it last week hastened the visit to the repair shop. It too runs Vista though when new I had a free upgrade to Windows 7 but if it ain't broke (other than being dropped) why fix it? It's faster than my PC and has the same software installed so I can, and have on one occasion, done all my magazine work on it.

Cloud apps - no thanks...

Have two Explorer windows open, attempting to move files between them. Check on task manager and the two sessions are currently using 894Mb between them....!

That's not right. What does the performance tab on task manager say? Can you print ok?

Going to do a chkdsk on it now, as a few errors appear to have been logged.

Something seems to hog the HD to the extent that anything you run has to wait for HD activity to subside, before it'll work.

Getting some segments on C: coming back as unreadable at the mo, there's a lot of free space on this drive it just depends whether there's anything important (if anything) stored there I suppose.

The full checkdisk has been completed and the duff areas "fenced off", it'll be interesting to see if it runs better, time to look at replacement HDs I think and some further backing up.
