I enjoy wandering round autojumbles, not so much for hunting out parts but for browsing through the odds and ends of motoring 'bygones' - automobilia - showing the social history of motoring.
I also spend time on Ebay (far too much time it has been suggested) and recently I've noticed an increase in what I would call 'items of dubious provenance' - fakes in other words. Some of these are easy to spot: recently manufactured car mascots purporting to be originals from the 20s and 30s, for example but others less easy to detect.
I've seen items to which badges have been stuck so that they can be claimed to have come from desks in dealers' showrooms (pen holders and ash trays); I've seen computer engraving in cigarette cases to give them 'age', petrol caps with car manufacturers' names printed on them to give them 'pedigree'. plus a whole lot more - all designed to deceive the unwary.
My reason for writing is that I have friends who have been duped into buying these fakes so be warned; all is not golf that glisters.... _________________ David
