Following on from the talk about flashing indicators vs semaphores etc, got me wondering what options you have fitted to your old motor?

The Volvo is broadly original I think, it did have rear mudflaps but as one fell off, I removed the other too. I've yet to fit any optional extras to the Dodge tourer of any note, although I have sourced a second rear stop/tail lamp of the correct matching style which may be fitted one day.

The truck was originally fitted with semaphore indicators, but instead of those I hunted down some directional (ie with illuminated arrows on them) turn lamps from the 30s/40s which look the part IMO. The spotlamp is a NOS item, acquired from a bloke in security at the place I used to work at. He was once a sales rep for a car accessories supplier, and he had kept back a few bits over the years (handily for me).

I'm not a great fan of optional bits and bobs or badges but I will confess to fitting a leaper (which was an optional extra for my car priced 2 guineas although I paid more than that).




I also fitted a heater which wasn't even an option in the pre-war cars but was standard from 1940 onwards and described as "Air Conditioning".



A radio was an optional extra for my car but the pre-war Philco specified took rather a lot of space in the passenger footwell.



I did fitted a radio many years back (only a post war one) but removed it again due to too many scratched knuckles whilst gear changing.

With the MGA I originally planned for the car to be 100% original spec! but have since made some changes:

Firstly my car wasn't fitted with windscreen washers although they were a factory / dealer option, apart from being practical it's also a legal requirement these days, so the factory option was fitted.

I opted for halogen headlamps with appropriate lucas lens, most people wont notice the difference, I feel the practical gain outweighs the cosmetic loss.

I fitted an alternator that looks like the original dynamo.

Yesterday I fitted a spin off oil filter adapter to replace the original canister , mainly for ease of changing the filter, but an additional gain has been the elimination of a small oil leak Smile

I fitted electronic ignition, it's in the distributor so not really noticeable .

I replaced the steering wheel with a smaller period looking one; the standard MGA wheel is massive and if you have long legs driving is really uncomfortable with the original wheel.

The front drum brakes were replaced with discs ; later MGA's has disc brakes as standard.

Finally I plan to fit a 5 speed type 9 gearbox, it's a common upgrade that receives universal approval.

Apart from all the above I stuck religiously to my original plan Very Happy Very Happy
