Please have a look to see if you can shed any light on the origins of this axle.

Photos re-jigged slightly.

Do you have any shots of the wheels themselves, from the outside?

The alloy diff case suggests low-volume production; the backplates look like they have Girling brake adjusters, so probably date from the 1930s onwards. Could it be something like early Reliant?

I would second the Reliant suggestion.

Not that it helps much, but the Motorway Mk3 is a remould crossply tyre. I can find references online to both 13" and 14" versions being available.

Not necessarily—early Morris Eights featured an alloy diff housing.

Obviously Girling braked as already mentioned. Is the rather unusual angle of the cylinder slider slot a clue?
As Rick says a wheel view might help. And perhaps identification of hexagons and drain bung as Metric or Imperial fasteners would narrow the possibilities of origin.

99.9% sure it is a Reliant Regal rear axle http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=reliant+axle&qpvt=reliant+axle&FORM=IGRE#view=detail&id=07D9D6445BBD9A197585ACD8CE1BAF397D70AAD5&selectedIndex=5
