Watching it now, very amused to hear Ed say how solid the car was underneath with only one rust hole - but did he (and you) spot all the welding that had been done previously?

I find the series interesting but I wish they'd say how many hours labour they've put in so we can figure the true cost, I reckon they must have lost money on the Morgan Plus Four or do they reckon we all have fully equipped workshops in which to do the work ourselves?

I know, I know... this has been discussed before but I'm stuck in front of the TV having pulled a back muscle Sad

Think they only make money from the TV fees and the appearance money it creates for the pair of them!

I'd agree, whilst it is entertaining to watch, they never show the times half a day is consumed doing a job that should take 2 mins, every restoration will have a few of these!!!!.....As an example, I have just rebuilt the braking system on my Morris Z van, the longest job was believe it or not removing the rear brake hose, I was trying to save the nut for the hose as its a really odd size.. I could get spanners on both the hose and nut, loads of space but it wouldn't budge, heated the nut up with oxy acet, still no movement, ended up having to use a nut splitter, and cutting a new nut on the lathe.

This took about a quarter the total time to, replace or refurbish all the wheel cylinders, make and fit new brake pipes, replace all brake shoes, make a new master cylinder .... it should have taken 2 mins to remove the hose, Sad

Yes been there many times myself. Also they always have good access like a two post car lift Smile A job on axle stands etc can add hours to a task. Not many people have that in there garage. Its one of the first things, I am buying when we move. Very Happy

There was a thread on this series on another forum and someone close to the series said that the cars are sold on to members of the film crew and families, so the whole thing is staged really. Still, it makes interesting viewing I guess. I've also got to watching the American Pickers series too and it's amazing how many barns there seem to be in the USA full of old memorabilia.

I recall that Ed bought the VW van they vinyl-wrapped in blue bubbles, probably because no one else would be seen dead in it!

American Pickers, Cash Cowboys and Pawn Stars have taken the place of American Chopper which we reckon has gone off the boil with the latest series - none to be taken seriously but all good to unwind to after a hectic day.

American Pickers and Cash Cowboys in particular make me green with envy when I see all of the automobilia they discover stashed away in people's barns and houses.
American Restoration is another programme where I am amazed at the dozens of petrol pumps stored away in Rick's yard awaiting restoration. And the ineterests of the Americans in things such as restored Coke machines, chocolate bar dispensers, Fairground rides etc.
It's surprising how having a population five times that of the UK multiplies the variety of people's interests.

Now here's a funny thing;

Wheeler Dealers buy a 91 Morgan Plus 4 (Reg no. J40 MOG) for £13k off Richard Thorne Classic Cars, spend £1600 on it and sell it to an un-named dealer for £21k. Have a guess what Richard Thorne Classic Cars are advertising for sale at the moment ....

Well spotted!
But it has to be remembered that , just like Top Gear, This is an entertainment programme and not a factual documentary. Most of the programme is scripted and pre-planned, with outcomes manipulated from the start.
I remember the programme where they 'made' a Beach Buggy from an old Volkswagon. The final Buggy had a totally different registration number from the car they started with!

It seems to me they coined the name 'Wheeler Dealers' then tried to devise a format the fitted the 'image' i.e. making out that they restore a car, advertise it and sell it to a member of the public.

Top Gear doesn't pretend to be anything other than entertainment but Ed knows his stuff, it's a pity he doesn't get a series of his own, something on the lines of A Car is Born perhaps.

I agree.

I note that we haven't seen anything new recently from Mark Evans (A Car is Born) either.

A pity.

Mark Evans (who I think is a great presenter) is branching out in other, non-motoring, programmes. He's done kids TV, and very recently did a wonderful programme "The Real War-Horse" about horses in WW1, obviously.

It's maybe worth pointing out that in a similar viegn to the Morgan above, it was kept from the viewers of 'A Plane is Born' that they had so many problems and delays in building it that the one you see him flying in the last episode is not actually the one they were building, which is a bit naughty!

That said, I accept that they are just entertainment programmes and should be enjoyed on that level.

Agreed but buying cheap/selling at a profit is central to Wheeler Dealers so knowing that the whole finding a buyer, negotiating a price, gleeful rubbing of hands together at the amount of profit is staged tarnishes the entertainment somewhat - to me, at least.

If they do a good job which enhances the car as much as they claim, finding a buyer ought to be easy enough. I just think Ed's talents are wasted in such a stylised show format.

Wheeler Dealers has made it onto Freeview, the Moke episode was on last night. This is the first time I'd seen WD, do they do more work on the vehicles in other episodes?

The Moke had a tiny bit of welding done to it, a spot of powdercoating, a few bits of trim, and a new rad and fan fitted. Hardly riveting TV IMHO, I much preferred the episode of CAR SOS that I caught the other evening, and For The Love Of Cars.

Should I check out the remaining episodes of WD?
