|
|
I'm dealing with a plastic bumper. It was obtained from a breakers yard and originating from a 2000 Vitara and I want to fit it to an early nineties Vitara that I'm restoring. This bumper is quite flexible, I suppose because it's for a 4x4 and is expected to have to flex in tight off road situations.
It's the totally wrong colour and needs to be repainted. I'm unsure how to remove the paint from a bumper, especially considering it's a bit flexible. I tried gently heating it with a heat gun and using a plastic scraper. This works but VERY slowly and even the plastic scraper is leaving some marks in the heated plastic. I guess that paint remover is out the question on plastic?
So is sanding the only option left? |

Why not leave the original paint on? Just key, prime and reprint.

Is that what's normally done? |

There probably isn't a normal, ideally in any restoration the paint is taken back to the bare metal / plastic. But there must be loads of cars where the paints a tad thicker as it's been re-painted, as long as the original paint is sound , keying then priming and re glossing is fine.

Some years ago I painted the plastic bumpers on a Dodge Van. Just flatted the old paint then used a flexible primer and paint specially made for painting plastic. I can't remember what it was called but it came from a local motor trade paint supplier(closed down now). |
