Before, I had owned a couple of Citroën CXes but they never were the right spec.
* a leaking rusting slifing roof;
* manual gearchange - the CX is such a smooth machine it cries for an auto;
* boring colours (silver grey, bright red)
* cloth seats of the wrong colour
* cheap version - no electric rear windows
* too much black instead of chrome or stainless steel
* gutless engines
* expensive metric tyre size
Ten years ago I found the ultimate CX which had everything:
* good colour - dark / purple red;
* tan leather seats;
* all the early Prestige fitments (thin chrome strips, chrome door internal openers) but still a SWB
* 2400 electronic injection - fast;
* automatic
* rare front middle armrest
plus a useful towing ball and only 2 previous owners.
For sale at a low end garage who were going to scrap it had I not bought it. It needed quite a bit of work. I changed the rear suspension bearings and hydraulic lines and had some welding done. There was rust in the doors, a dent in the front wing and the paint was a bit flat.
But what a fantastic drive. Loved it for about four years, then did not use it much because too expensive to run at the day. I had to drive quite a lot.
The successor was the Jaguar 420 I still have, this runs on LPG.
So I sold the CX.
Now, 6 years later, it is for sale locally. Only 3 weeks APK (our MOT) left, engine does not run because of a petrol problem, car has been standing for 4 months. Offers invited.
I could not resist and had a look. The paint is again flat but has been improved, the dent is gone, drivers seat has a tear, one headlight is rusty, but overall not really too bad....
The market for a CX is not good at the moment here because the law has been changed. Before, there was no road tax to be paid, now there is. This, together with the pityful condition of the car, probably means the car will be scrapped
So should I buy it again? I do not need it, but the memories are good and there's space in the shed, and will be very cheap...

and me
If I had the chance in the same circumstances with my favourite previous car I definitely would. |

And I would buy it, especially if it has that weird steering wheel |

| I'm going to buck the trend and say beware. Years ago I had a 1600E and spent a fortune on it, sold it to a young lad who ran it for a year and wrecked it. I brought it from him again it just was not the same. It sat on my drive for 6 months while I tried to get enthusiastic about it, in the end I got rid....never again. |

| Damned if you do - because it will cost a fortune - and damned if you don't - because you'll regret it for the rest of your life. It's a no win situation. |

My Dad had a 1600E sold it in the mid 70's. When I was 18 in 1981 I decided to get one and oddly the very first one I phoned about was my Dad's old one so I bought it back! To cap it all and to pay for the 1600E, I sold my Escort 1300 Sport back to the lad I bought it from 6 months previously.
However same as Minxy aboves comments, it wasn't the same car as was repainted black (was silver fox) and I did not realise just how rotten the chassis and structure were |
