It always makes me smile when I look at photos of this era, and also owning a 40's car with a fold down screen. The split screen, particularly the opening front screen highlights the speed the cars and lorries travelled at, but moreover, were summers hotter? _________________ KA

An advantage, Ka, of the split windscreen, is that if the wipers fail during a downpour, the windscreen can be opened sufficiently to be able to see where one is going. _________________ Dane- roverdriver but not a Viking. |

Probably not but the insulation of engine heat into the driver's compartment was minimal when compared to today's vehicles.
My old car has opening quarter lights and a sun roof but when opening the roof would let in direct sunlight just opening the windscreen an inch or two gives the best form of ventilation.
Before I fitted a heater to my car I found that opening the sun roof in winter was a good way of keeping warm as the wooden floor boards are far from hermetic and with a large exhaust pipe down each side of the car a significant amount of warm air was drawn in.

My Morgan does not need wipers, and therefore washers when it was MOT'd because it has a fold flat screen. _________________ KA

Yes ka I can see that washers could be a bit embarrassing.

A squeeze bottle and a squeegee will suffice.
Or do you do the same as I do a twist of the head clears the goggles. |
