|
|
I'm currently working on an article about the very first episode of 'Doctor Who' back in 1963, and I wonder if anyone can help me identify a car that was used in the production.
For a scene involving two school teachers following the Doctor's mysterious granddaughter back home, the production team had to use the front half a car on a framework, as this was the only way they could get a vehicle into the studio, which was on the fourth floor of the BBC's premises at Lime Grove!
For the transmitted episode, they used either a Wolseley 4/50 or 6/80 (the shots of the interior look the same for both cars), but this was actually the second go at it. The episode had actually been recorded several weeks earlier, but it was a bit of a technical disaster, so they decided to remount the entire thing.
However, in the episode as originally recorded, they used a different car. The shots you get of it are supposed to be at night, and there isn't a lot of detail, but can anyone identify what vehicle this was?
The door handle and the recess round the window looks rather like an Austin-8, but I can't find an image of a dashboard that matches.
And here's the interior with the levels cranked up a bit.

Hi Richard,
The Austin is very similar but I think the waist line detail is only single sided whereas the photo shows a second fold just above the handle.
I would guess a Singer 10 or 12 either just pre or post war.

Looks like it has a chrome handle on the side cover of the engine

Hi
I think it has a mirror on top of the scuttle/dashboard and possibly hanging W/wipers rather than scuttle mounted. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

I agree about the mirror but I think 47p2's enhanced picture shows the wipers on the scuttle.

To help the identification process, I've uploaded this short clip of the section in question to YouTube. The rest is just in close-up.

Hi Richard,
You need to make your video public. It's currently private.

Yes the wipers do look to be on the scuttle, possibly both pointing towards the driver side. Is that a chromed windscreen hinge inside the front A pillar? _________________ ROVER

Well one additional piece of evidence from the video is that the side windows are fitted with draft excluding glass sections that are fixed at the top of the frames.

Oooohhhh, that's looking very close, isn't it!
Here's a longer clip of them getting out of the car later on.

Yes. This is actually the transmitted episode as mentioned in the original post where they used a different half a car. The BBC obviously had a few hanging around! |
