When the liner Andrea Doria and MV Stockholm collided in 1956, I was ten years old and fascinated by ships and the sea. I could recite the position of the collision, the names of the rescue ships and provide details of speeds and course. I used the information to write an exam essay, which earned me a 96% pass in English.

58 years later I have just discovered this.

In 2002 I researched a certain James Starley and his nephew John K. Starley, and wrote a magazine article from my research. Just recently I was asked to pass the story to another minor publication, but thought that I might do a little more investigating first. Lo and behold, lots more on-line information has come to light. Unfortunately some is clearly inaccurate, but now I am re-researching to bring my original tale up to date with new additional material.

Incidentally, I remember the newspaper and wireless stories of the Andrea Doria sinking when it happened.
