I'd have a beef about that if it was around here. Saying that, if I saw a cow at the side of the road, I'd be slowing right down anyway.

At least it'll slow down people prone to driving in a brisket fashion.

The actual radar type is called a MESTA, or colloquially known as "the owl" (hibou) here in France and the police are using them most deviously. Last week it was set up behind a hedge five metres outside the 70 kph limit but pointing inside so you had no time for slowing down at all and loads were caught. Luckily I was warned by oncoming motorists. Worse, they've just extended the 70 kph limit further out of town and now the whole ruddy town is 30 kph since the greens got control of the council. at 700€ a sign, and with for example 20 sign including repeaters along just one road, the town council spent over 50,000€ reducing speed to 20 mph, and of course the BiB are having a field day.

Here in France, if you get near to losing your licence, you can go on a course and get four points back. If you know that in 2004 65,000 people took these courses but last year 325,000 you will understand just how we are being policed off the road.

To a certain extent, we still have policing "by consent" in this country. It would be odd for the cops to exercise underhand methods such as this.

A few years ago in North Wales, cameras were being hidden in horse trailers that would be casually parked at the side of the road, with a rear door open. It may still go on.

Not to mention the beat up builder's van with tabloid papers and fast food containers on the dash used in Derbyshire.

From the front

From the back

Not convinced?

Isn't it still the case in the UK that they need to have a camera warning sign up within so many metres of the van? I know you used to be able to challenge tickets on this basis, although the rozzers then got together with the councils to put permanent camera signs everywhere so that people get used to them as another piece of roadside clutter Rolling Eyes
