GOODWOOD 73rd MEMBERS’ MEETING TO HONOUR MOTOR SPORT ICONS IN 2015.
Goodwood will celebrate the achievements of several motor sport legends at the 73rd Members’ Meeting, by naming the races at the event in their honour.
A 12-race programme has been confirmed for the event, which will be held on March 21-22, 2015 in front of an exclusive audience comprising members of the Goodwood Road Racing Club and a limited number of like-minded enthusiasts.
The Derek Bell Cup – a race for one-litre ‘screamer’ Formula 3 cars – will honour the five-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner, who raced with great success in F3 at Goodwood. Meanwhile, the achievements of double World Champion Graham Hill will be marked with an hour-long, two-driver race for GT cars of 1960-66 on the Saturday evening of the event.
The Hawthorn Trophy, named after Britain’s first F1 World Champion, Mike Hawthorn, will be held for front-engined F1, F2 and Formula Libre cars of the 1950s, the likes of which brought him to prominence right here at Goodwood in 1952, and gave him his greatest successes.
Tommy Sopwith, runner-up in the inaugural British Touring Car Championship in 1958, lends his name to a race for 1950s saloons, while Trevor Taylor’s achievements will be marked with a race for rear-engined, drum-braked Formula Junior, of the type in which he won the 1960 British Championship.
Early Can-Am prototypes and pre-1935 grand prix cars will make up the fields for, respectively, the Bruce McLaren and Earl Howe Trophies, while a race for British 1960s production sports cars will be named in honour of ‘aftermarket king’ Les Leston, whose products were vital in the creation of some of the era’s most endearing racing machines.
A race exclusively for Porsche 911s of pre-1967 vintage will be held for the John Aldington Trophy, in honour of the man widely credited with introducing Porsche into the UK.
As previously announced, the Gerry Marshall Trophy for Group 1 touring cars, and the Salvadori Cup for 1950s sports cars, both of which proved to be instant crowd favourites at this year’s 72nd Members’ Meeting, will return to the action. _________________ Rick - Admin

FAMOUS LOTUS ELITE JOINS GOODWOOD 73rd MEMBERS’ MEETING LINE-UP
One of the most famous Lotus Elites ever created will take part in the Goodwood 73rd Members’ Meeting on March 21-22 next year in a race paying tribute to the man who made the car a star of British motor racing, Alfred Lazarus Fingleston, AKA Les Leston.
The Series II Elite, known simply as ‘DADIO’, because of its registration number – ‘DAD 10’ – will be raced by its owner Robin Longdon in the Les Leston Cup for British sports and GT cars of 1960-66. Leston, a renowned driver in the 1950s and ’60s, retired to set up an aftermarket empire producing accessories and safety equipment that were hugely popular with competitors in period.
Leston won 154 races during his career as well as the 1954 British Formula 3 title, but carved a career out of his other passion, jazz music, earning the nickname ‘Daddio’ on the scene while drumming with band The Clay Pigeons.
After buying the Elite and fitting it with the resultant ‘DAD 10’ number plate, Leston waged some legendary battles with the similar ‘LOV 1’, car driven by Graham Warner of rival squad Chequered Flag Racing, and was rewarded with the 1961 British Sports Car title after a campaign that featured several class wins at Goodwood.
He sold the car less than a year later, and retired from racing to focus instead on his business interests, which included pioneering flameproof overalls and helmets.
The car, easily recognisable among Elites due to its distinctive front and rear bodywork alterations, was lost for over a decade, but was found by Elite enthusiast Malcolm Ricketts in a damaged state in a field next to a repair shop in 1978.
A six-year restoration project, involving Ricketts, Tony Bates and Longdon, ensued, and the car has since become a regular, and popular, competitor on the historic racing scene.
‘DAD 10’ will battle against numerous Austin Healey 3000s, Morgan +4s, TVR Grantura MkIIIs plus representation from Rochdale, Tornado, Daimler, Turner, WSM and Reliant. _________________ Rick - Admin

TOURING CAR LEGENDS HUFF AND SOPER MAKE MEMBERS’ MEETING DEBUTS IN 2015
Touring car legends Rob Huff and Steve Soper will go head-to-head in classic Group 1 Ford Capris at the Goodwood 73rd Members’ Meeting on March 21-22 next year.
Huff, 34, the 2012 World Touring Car Champion, gave Lada its maiden victory in the series this year, taking his wins tally to 27, and added a record seventh tin-top win on the streets of Macau to make him the most successful tin-top racer in the history of the Guia Race.
He will race long-time friend Richard Meins’ Bastos-liveried Capri III 3.0S in the Gerry Marshall Trophy for Group 1 touring cars of 1970-82, and will also take part in the Graham Hill Trophy for 1960s GT cars in the same Jaguar E-type he and Meins took to fifth place in the RAC TT Celebration race at the Goodwood Revival this year.
Fellow Briton Soper, 62, won races in the British, European and World Touring Car Championships, plus the Macau Guia event, Spa and Nurburgring 24 Hours and the Japanese Touring Car title during works spells with British Leyland, Ford and BMW.
His Capri will be the Gordon Spice Racing-liveried III 3.0S machine that entrant John Young and five-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Emanuele Pirro took to second in the 2014 race.
Goodwood House Captains Pirro, Anthony Reid, Jochen Mass and Nicolas Minassian will also contest the race. Their cars are yet to be confirmed.
The Gerry Marshall Trophy, named after the saloon racing cult hero of the 1970s and 80s, will feature a sprint race on the Saturday of the event to set the grid for a two-driver feature race the following day.
Rob Huff said: “I can’t wait for the 73rd Members’ Meeting. I’ve been involved in the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Revival before and I’ve always had a really good time on the track and off it. I was due to race a Rover in the Gerry Marshall Trophy in 2014, but had to pull out due to my WTCC testing commitments with Lada Sport, so I’m keen to see what we can do in the Capri. Richard and I had a strong run in the E-type at the Revival this year, so we’d expect the same again, but I’m sure the competition will be as tough as ever.”
Steve Soper said: “I love competing at Goodwood. Lord March goes that extra mile to make sure the experience is as authentic as possible and the result is just exceptional. I’m excited to be driving with John Young in the Capri as he’s a quick driver and the car proved itself to be pretty fast this year, but you always find at Goodwood that the rival cars come back quicker every year, so we’ll have to be at our very best if we’re to challenge for honours.” _________________ Rick - Admin

BTCC LEGENDS HARVEY AND GRAVETT JOIN 73rd MEMBERS’ MEETING LINE-UP
Former British Touring Car champions Robb Gravett and Tim Harvey, plus a number of other motor racing stars, are the latest drivers to sign up for the 73rd Members’ Meeting at Goodwood Motor Circuit on March 21-22.
Gravett and Harvey will both take part in the Gerry Marshall Trophy for Group 1 saloons, competing against other notable racers including Anthony Reid, Darren Turner and Stuart Graham.
Gravett, who won the 1990 title, will climb behind the wheel of a 1974 Broadspeed Dolomite, sharing with David Swig in the race that pays tribute to tin-top cult hero Gerry Marshall.
Harvey, whose BTCC crown came in 1992, and makes his Members’ Meeting debut, will race an ex-works Triumph Dolomite Sprint that was the first version of the car to be converted for racing in 1973, and still bears the British Leyland livery, sharing with owner Anthony Robinson.
A third Dolomite, Timothy Morley’s Triplex-liveried example, will be raced by Methuen House Captain Anthony Reid – the BTCC championship runner-up in 1998 and 2000. Reid and Morley finished 10th in the Gerry Marshall Trophy last year.
Stuart Graham, the only man to win both the two and four-wheeled versions of the Tourist Trophy post-war, returns with Nigel Garrett in a Brut 33 Faberge-liveried Chevrolet Camaro Z28, determined to do better than the podium finish the duo earned in 2014.
Aston Martin factory GT driver Darren Turner, who has a pair of Le Mans 24 Hours class victories to his name, as well as wins in the BTCC and several other international GT racing series, will race David Clark’s Camaro, which started the 1981 Spa 24 Hours from pole position, and will also race his own Turner Mk1 in the Les Leston Cup for British sports cars of the 1960s.
The Members’ Meeting revives the tradition of club racing at Goodwood in the 1950s and ‘60s, with an exclusive audience and all-areas access for all visitors to the event in the relaxed atmosphere of the iconic Goodwood Motor Circuit.

JEAN-PIERRE JARIER REUNITED WITH POLE-WINNING SHADOW FORMULA 1 CAR AT GOODWOOD 73rd MEMBERS’ MEETING
A pair of Formula 1 cult heroes, Jean-Pierre Jarier and the Shadow DN5, will be reunited for the first time in 40 years at the Goodwood 73rd Members’ Meeting on March 21-22 this year.
Jarier will drive the most famous Shadow of them all - DN5 chassis 1A - as part of a high-speed demonstration of ‘high-airbox’ F1 cars of the mid-1970s that brings more than 25 vehicles from an era of the sport in which relative freedom in technical regulations led to some of the most iconic car designs ever seen in grand prix racing.
Against expectations, Frenchman Jarier put ‘1A’ on pole position for the Argentinian Grand Prix that opened the 1975 F1 season, and the following race in Brazil. Technical problems prevented him starting the former race, while more gremlins put him out in Brazil after he had led convincingly.
The car, which took a best finish of fourth at the Spanish GP later that year, was badly damaged in a high-speed crash in Monaco, but was painstakingly restored in time to return to racing at last year’s Monaco Grand Prix Historique.
Jarier, now 68, came to prominence by winning the European Formula 2 crown in 1973 and, after a 12-year spell in F1, went on to race touring and GT cars. He has also been a stunt driver in several Hollywood films, including renowned Robert de Niro thriller ‘Ronin’.
Joining the Shadow on track will be some sensational cars of the era, including Niki Lauda’s 1975 title-winning Ferrari 312T, Lotus 72s raced in period by Emerson Fittipaldi and Ronnie Peterson, and March, Tyrrell and McLaren machinery campaigned by, respectively, Peterson, Patrick Depailler and James Hunt.
Rarities such as the world’s only Amon AF101, as raced by Chris Amon in 1974, the unique Shadow DN7-Matra raced only by Jarier, and the Token RJ02 in which Wales’ greatest motor racing hero, Tom Pryce, made his F1 debut, will also take part. _________________ Rick - Admin

BRITISH TOURING CAR ACE ANDREW JORDAN JOINS GOODWOOD 73rd MEMBERS’ MEETING LINE-UP IN MIGHTY MINI
Former British Touring Car champion Andrew Jordan has become the latest star name to confirm his participation in the 73rd Goodwood Members’ Meeting on March 21-22.
Jordan, 25, will share a 1979-spec Patrick Motorsport-liveried Mini 1275 GT, prepared by Swiftune, in the Gerry Marshall Trophy, which is held in honour of the tin-top cult hero and will feature Group 1 production saloons of 1970-82.
His co-driver will be car entrant Nick Swift, who brilliantly beat a plethora of more powerful Rover SD1s, Ford Capris and Chevrolet Camaros to finish fourth overall in the Gerry Marshall Trophy at last year’s 72nd Members’ Meeting with Jason Stanley.
Although this will be Jordan’s Members’ Meeting debut, the Midlands driver has competed at Goodwood before and appeared at the Revival Meeting twice; most notably last year, when he raced an Austin A40 to second in the St Mary’s Trophy at the Revival with his father Mike.
Red Bull Athlete Jordan confirmed last week that he will switch from his family’s Eurotech Honda team to the Triple Eight-run works MG squad as he seeks to add another BTCC crown to the one he claimed in 2013.
Jordan joins fellow star drivers Steve Soper, Rob Huff, Jochen Mass, Anthony Reid, Nicolas Minassian, Emanuele Pirro, Rob Austin and Patrick Watts as confirmed for the event.
The Members’ Meeting recreates the relaxed and intimate culture of club racing at Goodwood in the 1950s and ‘60s, with access-all-areas for all visitors and Goodwood’s largest-ever party on the Saturday night, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display.
Among the on-track highlights will be high-speed demonstrations of more than 20 high-airbox Formula 1 cars of the early-1970s and a race exclusively for pre-1967 Porsche 911s.
Andrew Jordan said: “I had a terrific time at the 2014 Goodwood Revival racing the A40 with my dad, and having one of the most enjoyable battles of my life with Emanuele Pirro and Anthony Reid. I get such a buzz out of driving an historic car, with tiny tyres, right on the limit, and given what the Swiftune Minis achieved last year at the Members’ Meeting, I think Nick and I can be right at the sharp end again. I can’t wait.” _________________ Rick - Admin

FIFTH GEAR’S TIFF NEEDELL RETURNS TO GOODWOOD FOR 73rd MEMBERS’ MEETING
Television star and ex-Formula 1 racer Tiff Needell is the latest big name to be added to the Goodwood 73rd Members’ Meeting line-up as the star-studded entry list for the March 21-22 event nears completion.
Needell, whose father Tony contested the inaugural Members’ Meeting at Goodwood in 1949, will race in the Gerry Marshall Trophy for Group 1 touring cars of upto 1982 vintage, which is named in honour of the 1970s tin-top cult hero.
The Fifth Gear and former Top Gear presenter, who started the 1980 Belgian Grand Prix for the British Ensign team and can also list a British Touring Car race win and a podium finish at the Le Mans 24 Hours among his many achievements, will race a 1981 Rover 3500 SD1.
The car, which carries the famous Daily Express livery, is the same machine in which Needell finished ninth in last year’s Gerry Marshall Trophy. He will once again share the former Dave Price Racing and Tom Walkinshaw Racing car with its owner, Peter Mallett.
Goodwood House Captains Emanuele Pirro (Torbolton), Jochen Mass (Darnley) and Nicolas Minassian (Aubigny), all of whom will lead their respective teams in pursuit of the Goodwood House Trophy, have all now had their cars for the Gerry Marshall Trophy confirmed.
Formula 1 Grand Prix winner Mass will pilot a 1982-spec Rover 3500 SD1 in the Sanyo livery made famous by Jeff Allam’s British Touring Car exploits while five-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Pirro – second in last year’s race – will drive Philip Perryman’s 1977 UFO Jeans BMW 530i; a car that makes its Members’ Meeting debut in 2015.
Minassian, who was unable to compete in last year’s event, has secured a seat in Duncan McKay’s BP Ford Capri III 3.0S, which was driven by Darren Turner last year. Anthony Reid, whose Methuen House took the prize in 2014, was last week confirmed to drive a Triumph Dolomite Sprint.
They join a top-line list of current and former professional racers in the Gerry Marshall Trophy, which includes 2012 World Touring Car champion Rob Huff, BTCC title winners Andrew Jordan Tim Harvey, Robb Gravett and tin-top heroes Steve Soper, Darren Turner, Rob Austin, Stuart Graham and Patrick Watts.
The Members’ Meeting revives the spirit and camaraderie of the 71 BARC events held at Goodwood Motor Circuit from 1949-66 and provides an intimate and uncrowded atmosphere for all visitors, along with access to all areas of the site, including Goodwood’s largest-ever party on the Saturday night, which will culminate in a spectacular fireworks display set to music. _________________ Rick - Admin

GOODWOOD 73rd MEMBERS’ MEETING MARKS 20 YEARS OF THE MCLAREN F1 GTR WITH HUGE GATHERING
Goodwood will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 1990s’ most iconic GT racer, the McLaren F1 GTR, with a huge on-track display of the 600bhp machines at the 73rd Members’ Meeting on March 21-22.
High-speed demonstrations at the famous Goodwood Motor Circuit will take place on both days of the event, with 15 examples of the incredible F1 GTR already confirmed and more set to follow in both short and long-tail specification.
The F1 GTR, powered by a 6.1-litre V12 BMW engine, was created using a spare road-car chassis from the Gordon Murray-designed machine after customer Ray Bellm requested a competition version from McLaren boss Ron Dennis.
Unprecedented success followed, with a debut victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1995 plus back-to-back crowns in the BPR Global Endurance Championship, further titles in Britain and Japan, and more international victories for the even faster, long-tail version.
The Harrods-liveried car in which Derek Bell and his son Justin finished third at Le Mans in ’95 will appear at Goodwood, as will long and short-tail versions carrying a variety of different colour schemes, including those from West, Gulf and FINA.
Indy 500 winner Kenny Brack will drive an ex-Parabolica Motorsport ‘long-tail’ machine at Goodwood while Richard Smith’s similar car - in which Brack was narrowly beaten to victory at last year’s Festival of Speed – will also appear.
Other significant cars include Nick Mason’s unraced development machine, which the former Pink Floyd drummer will drive, and the Gulf car in which Bellm and Maurizio Sandro Sala won BPR races in 1995, and which was subsequently taken to the ’96 British GT crown.
The British GT-winning long-tail ‘EMI’ car, an ex-Bigazzi machine raced by Jacques Laffite at Le Mans, and Ralf Schumacher’s race-winning Lark version from the 1996 Japanese GT series, have also been confirmed among a prestigious list of entries. _________________ Rick - Admin

Did anyone catch this on TV yesterday evening? If not, it's due to be repeated, as outlined below:
-----------
ITV TO BROADCAST HIGHLIGHTS OF GOODWOOD 73RD MEMBERS’ MEETING DURING EASTER
Highlights of the sell-out Goodwood 73rd Members’ Meeting will be broadcast on ITV for the first time in April.
The one-hour-long show, which has been produced by Aurora Media, will be broadcast in a prime time slot on ITV4 and will be presented by Amanda Stretton with commentary from David Addison.
The programme will be first broadcast on Thursday, April 2 at 2100 and then repeated on Easter Sunday, 5 April on the same channel at 1800. There will be a second repeat on 2345 on Easter Monday, 6 April at 2345 on the main ITV channel.
The race action will be frenetic, with extended highlights of the Gerry Marshall Trophy for Group 1 touring cars that featured tin-top heroes such as Matt Neal, Jason Plato and Andrew Jordan in machinery as diverse as a 5.7-litre Chevrolet Camaro and a Triumph Dolomite Sprint.
Highlights of the Bruce McLaren Trophy for early Can-Am sports prototypes – the fastest cars to race during the Members’ Meeting weekend – and the Derek Bell Cup for ‘screamer’ Formula 3 single-seaters – which resulted in a photo finish for victory – will also be shown.
The incredible IWC shoot-out that pitched World Endurance Champion Anthony Davidson in a modern Mercedes Formula 1 car against a brand new AMG GT and the classic ‘Red Pig’ AMG 300 SEL will feature, as will footage from the McLaren F1 GTR and high-airbox F1 high-speed demonstrations.
There will also be insight into the restoration of the ex-Les Leston ‘DAD10’ Lotus Elite that took part in the race that bears his name, an interview with Mini master Nick Swift on his giant-killing antics in his tiny 1275 GT and a tug-of-war between BTCC drivers past and present for bragging rights ahead of the new season. _________________ Rick - Admin
