Morning all,

I remember endless conversations taking place with pals at school, re the relative merits of our parents' choice of family car(s). This was probably at the time that dad ran a Saab, which I'd vigorously defend against competition from friends' parents who ran, say, a Cavalier SRi, or an early (E23) 7-Series BMW.

Do you remember similar, school-based, automotive rivalries while at school?

RJ

When at senior school my parents traded in their old Vauxhall Cavalier and bought a 1992 Cavalier SRi. Lovely car, I was the envy of my friend for a while when they were all being ferried round in Metro's and the like.

In the 60`s I was at a Grammar school in the London suburbs. Many of the kids came from affluent families and so, when old enough, were able to get to school in their own cars, many new, or on their own motorcycles.

Many were pretentious snobs who enjoyed the perceived superiority that their money, and consequently their possessions, gave them.

My Dad was was a working man, in the motor trade as it was known. My best mate`s Dad was my brothers History teacher (a really nice man) of similar humble means.

But Dad`s skills and facilities meant that we could cobble up interesting machinery on a budget. I had a 125 desmo Ducati that had come from Vic Camp, the importer at the time, in bits that we built up with custom paint and alloy. My mate used his Dad`s old Norton 650. Dad helped us keep them both on the road and in good condition.

My Ducati could easily outrun and outhandle most of the BSA Bantams (!) and similar dross that other school kids had and give many of the bigger bikes a good run for their money. One turned up on a Douglas Dragonfly one day. The Ducati acquitted itself well!

There were very few car-owning parents when I started school - everyone walked to school - although one parent I recall was Gordon Lamb, who was the local VW dealer. My father ran a 1936 Lagonda Rapier at the time - initially other boys' reactions were something like Coo! Racer!... by the time I left junior school it was more Core! Old Banger!

My Dad's car when I was at school was a 1934 Wolseley 9 (can be seen on the main site) which he had purchased before going off to war in '39.
It didn't see light of day until '45 & was the family car until '56, to be followed by a '47 Morris 10 Series M & a '54 Morris Oxford(also on the main site) until his first new car, a Wolseley 1500 in '60. Cheers,JD.

I remember being teased about one particular car. My father had the Ford dealership in Fareham and we had a Zephyr with the plate LOT 7. They all said my Dad bought his cars at auction! He changed frequently of course, so I never knew what would be next up - a trade-in, or a new demonstrator, but I do remember the Daimler pre-selector and the Pilot V8. But as far as other friends and family had, I really can't remember!

There was always rivalry between us kids about parents cars but one day a (previously not particularly popular) boy was collected from school by his Dad in a new E Type Jaguar

From that point on the lad had lots of friends - all of them hoping to get a ride in the E Type.
