We make the journey to Beaulieu for both Spring and Autumn Autojumbles but over the last few years are finding very little. We enjoy Beaulieu for the day out so its never a waste but it has made us think about venturing to something a bit different?

I know ebay has played a part in autojumbles changing but I still think back to the days when we used to find some really good bargains and things that we were actually after, I always write out a list over the few weeks before but now I rarely find anything I am after.

My brother in law lives near Nottingham so a trip up to Newark is planned but I have been wondering what else is out there?

I shall be taking the Dodge to Autokarna, Nottingham, again this year. Apparently there are nearly 800 cars entered (£5 entry fee) and one of the biggest Autojumbles in the Midlands.

I could and probably should take the Swallow - there are 150 sevens entered - but I will be driving from Derby to Nottingham on the A52 and I always feel nervous and vulnerable in such a small, slow car on a dual carriageway. I will be going with my friend who is taking his 12/50 Alvis so at least in the Dodge I can keep up with him!

The Autojumbles seldom produce hard to find parts - I am looking for a 21" snap ring for a '26 Dodge Brothers disc wheel rim by the way) - but if I can pick up the odd thing or two which I will probably never need I can at least convince myself that if I hadn't bought it I would kick my self if I ever do ! (my logic Razz

)

I can understand your nervousness on the 52, certainly between Derby and Bardills rounderbout, moderns come from the four lane M1, and seem to overlook the 40mph speed limit.
When shaking down the Dreadnought for the Pioneer, I decided a 'straight line thrash' down the 52, would give me a chance to balance speed/air slide/ignition advance levers, finding somewhere around 20mph was optimum, quite reasonable for the only example ever built, and almost 100 years old!
But you are right, any trip south in the Morgan is always an adventure, particularly on any motorway, having a cruising speed slower than lorries.

How about a detour via Long Eaton, or is that too much of a faff? I undertand your reluctance to use the A52, it's a nasty road that I wouldn't fancy in anything less than a tank...

... or take the back roads via Stanley, Ilkeston and Trowell? Who cares if it takes half an hour longer!

I took the Triumph GT6 one year and the car behind me got rear ended on that road. Perhaps I was lucky not to have been caught up in the crash but it has made me feel nervous is a small car. True, it could happen anywhere but I don't want to risk it.

I do enjoy Beaulieu as a day out, even the drive through the New Forest is nice and we always find a nice pub on the way home to eat in.

A lot of traders this year were telling us they kept the good stuff back for ebay, shame really.

As a young guy I tried my hand at selling stuff from auto jumble stalls. In those days, the returns were small because the prices were low but on the plus side, if you were prepared to work hard you could make a good profit from sheer quantity.

I eventually gave up when I found I was taking too much stuff home again. It has always been easy to shift small things that people can take away in a bag or put in their pocket but I remember giving away complete Morris 8 axles, engines, transmissions and rads after my last stall at Dorking failed to shift the stuff - despite offering to deliver it!

I have done a few local autojumbles and did Beaulieu a couple of times as a trader the last about 10 years ago. I have always made a bit of money but never a lot especially when the pitch price is so high at these events.

Years back we used to have an autojumble in Taunton, very good turnouts both of public and traders and the pitches were a lot cheaper. Times move on and the site was developed and now we have nothing like that round here.

Over the last few years we stopped going to a lot of shows as the autojumble element decreased. Often we went mainly for the various traders, but when those traders were replaced by market stalls - fruit & veg, mobile phone accessories and all the other tat we could see for free any week in one or another of the local towns - we came to the conclusion that many of the shows weren't worth the entry fee, never mind the drive to get there. Of course that feeds into a whole other debate...

I cant stand paying good money for an autojumble only to find spaces packed out with mobile phone or fudge stalls.
