The last owner of my Minx called her 'Ruby' based on her colour, it just so happens my late mother's name was Ruby (alive when I purchased the car) so the name stuck as much out of respect and fondness for my mother.
PS Would it be bad luck to change a name if one had been assigned (I'm thinking along the lines of it being bad luck to change the name of a boat isn't it?) |

|
|
When I acquired my present cars my son was in his early teens and fancied himself as a comedian.
He christened my Morris Two Seater "Boris" and my Singer Roadster "Pearl".
(Think Carly Simon.)
He regarded these names as the height of wit and originality although I did caution him not to give up the day job. Since then I have encountered a few Morrises with the same name and a few Roadsters with the name of a well known female singer.
However, these names stuck and almost 10 years on the cars are still referred to by them.
I know some people find the use of pet names for cars irritating but I rather like them. |

Mine have all been named after the number plates:
Moggy Cath (CTH) Humber Imperial Connie (CNE) and landcrab Mo (UMO) Previous owner called her Big Mo, but I dropped the Big part as when I got her I had a 126 Merc V8 long wheelbase, and Mo certainly wasn't as big as that |

My late Mother in law called all her cars Caroline. She never revealed why despite me asking many times!
I think if I named cars I might choose names similar to those chosen by Vettel in F1, a touch racy.. |

My old Dodge was called "Roger". (Roger the Dodger)
My Mini was known as "Scully" from Miniscule, "Scully" X Files.
Our modern is called Helen. Reflected in our personal license plate,
HELNGON
I know, very sad. |

At the risk of going off at a tangent, indeed there's a classic ship example in the USS Phoenix. In US Navy service she was considered the luckiest ship afloat because she survived the Pearl Harbour disaster undamaged. Much later she was sold to another country and renamed General Belgrano.
Getting back on topic: no, I eschew pet names for cars. My cats have names, but then, they're pets, and they respond to them. The best vehicle name I've ever heard came from a motorcyclist who called his Vincent Sir Costalot, which I confess I've occasionally considered bestowing on the Morris.

Our 47 Minx has always been known as 'Harriet' and our Karrier Bantam as 'Katy'. The kids like to give the vehicles names. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

A name for a car helps to differentiate quickly and easily between individual machines, especially when they are more-or-less the same make and model.
We have a Rover P4 called 'Beatrix' because our son exclaimed that it was the sort of car that he imagined Beatrix Potter driving. Our other P4 is 'Polly' named after 'Polythemus' the Cyclops in 'The Iliad', because, of course it is a Cyclops. Our youngest daughter suggested connection and the name.
Now that I am soon to take delivery of another P4 Cyclops, I have given our other daughter the task of finding a suitable name for it. _________________ Dane- roverdriver but not a Viking. |
